Sports briefs: Cougars hold off War Eagles

MOCKSVILLE — The Cougars left Mocksville with a 62-59 victory Thursday in a nonconference game against the War Eagles. Carson was ahead by five at the start of the final period.

Davie County scored 21 points in the final quarter.  The War Eagles scored 21 points in the fourth, but they came up three points shy.

Carson’s Jamarius Hairston led all scorers with 14 points. The Cougars also got 12 points from Jacob Raper. Marquez McCain contributed nine points.

For the War Eagles, Nic Starnes led the way with 13 points. Holden Poole was second in scoring on the team with 10 points.

North Rowan girls

SPENCER — A dismal second half by North Rowan’s girls on Thursday led to a 19-point loss to Charlotte Ardrey Kell. The Cavaliers put up only 12 points in the third and fourth quarters of a 54-35 setback.

North Rowan was held scoreless for about 10 minutes. The drought ended with a 3-pointer by Ashely Blaire that cut the Knights’ lead to 47-32 in the middle of the fourth quarter.

Ardrey Kell held a one-point lead after the first quarter, and the teams were tied at 23 at halftime. The Knights extended that lead in the third quarter and held a 40-29 advantage at the start of the final period.

Carson girls

Davie County topped Carson 68-56 in a nonconference game. The War Eagles got 18 points from Madison Zaferatos 18, 15 points from De’Jah Joyner 15 and eight points from Caitlyn Peebles.

Carson JV boys

The Cougars picked up a win Thursday night. The Cougars defeated Davie County 57-40. Owen White had 11 points for Carson.

SPC wrestling

East Rowan won big Thursday in a conference match with South Rowan. The Mustangs topped the Raiders 66-12.

Winning by pin for the Mustangs were Logan Hass (120 pounds), Jeffrey Burrell (126), Wesley Porter (132), Colton Carico (138), Keith Tillman (145), Luke Miller (152), Daniel Muncy (170), Josh Beaver (182) and Cody Hiatt (220).

The Raiders picked up a pair of pins from Logan Durham (113) and Jonathan Hunt (160).

West Rowan boys

The Falcons fell 67-65 on Thursday in a close game at Mooresville. Celexus Long had a team-high 20 points, and Caleb Mauldin contributed 14.

East Rowan JV boys

The Msutangs topped Central Davidson 51-46 on Thursday.
