A Holland Drive woman is in the Rowan County Detention Center, accused of taking deputies on a brief foot chase Friday morning to avoid being arrested.

A Rowan County Sheriff’s deputy went to the 1000 block of Holland Drive to serve a warrant on Kelly Renea Bates when he was met at a side door by Lentz Bates Jr. The deputy inquired if Kelly Bates, 30, was home and the man said she left out the back door.

A report said the deputy saw Kelly Bates hop over a neighbor’s fence and he followed her. She headed toward Miller Road, where the officer knew her mother lived in the 4300 block. The deputy stepped in a low spot, landing on his knee. He quickly got up, a report said, and caught up to Kelly Bates as she was calling for her mother to let her in the house.

She was charged with misdemeanor resist, obstruct, delay an officer. She was served three warrants for order for arrest and issued an $8,000 secured bond. She remains in the Rowan County Detention Center. Lentz Bates Jr., 53, was charged with misdemeanor failure to appear. He was given a written promise to appear in court.

Kelly Bates was convicted in April of driving while impaired. She was convicted in February 2012 of driving while impaired. She’s also been convicted of driving while license revoked, misdemeanor larceny, possession of drug paraphernalia and shoplifting.

Kelly Bates has a pending 2011 Rowan County case for driving while impaired and misdemeanor probation violation. She also has a pending 2014 Rowan case for simple possession of schedule III controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.
