Hundreds of people applied to receive Christmas toys for their children Friday at the J.F. Hurley YMCA.

The Rowan County Christmas Bureau held the first of three events where people in need can apply to get toys for the holiday season.

The organizations involved include Christmas Happiness, the Salvation Army, Toys for Tots, Operation Santa, Project Santa and the United Way.

About 15 volunteers were helping people with their applications. One of them was Tangy Roseborough. She said she enjoys helping people.

“I love to provide resources to people,” she said.

Louise Bush, of Beard Street in Salisbury, was at the YMCA Friday to apply for toys. She said she’s used the programs in the past for her foster children.

“It is helpful,” she said.

Maj. David Craddock, the interim commander of the Rowan County Salvation Army, was working at the event and said, “No child should go without a happy Christmas.”

People can also apply on Today from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the YMCA at 828 Jake Alexander Blvd. W. and on Dec. 6 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the same location.

If available, applicants should bring their driver’s license, W-7 form for each member of the household, Medicaid card, birth certificates for children 12 and under, proof of all income and expenses, unemployment, and custody papers for guardians.
