Area sports briefs: Blue Bears at Duke

Livingstone’s defending CIAA champions play at No. 4 Duke on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Livingstone lost outstanding guards Jody Hill and Mark Thomas, but coach James Stinson is expected to have another strong team.

Athletic forward Eric Mayo and talented young guard Eric Dubose are preseason All-CIAA players.

NFL

Jumal Rolle (Catawba) saw action for the Houston Texans on Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles and played well.

Rolle had two interceptions that he returned for 17 yards, plus two tackles and two breakups.

Local golf

Fifty-four GARS members played at Texas Scramble at Corbin Hills.

The first-place team at minus-7 consisted of Buddy Barger, Bobby Clark, Clive Mahaffey and Winsten Mahaffey.

The second-place team at minus-5 is John Cress, Jan Kichefski, Frank Rowell and Mick Rowell.

The third-place team at minus-4 was Bobby Bryant, Doug Lingle, Ross Howard and Ernest Wagner.

Winsten Mahaffey had  the longest putt.

• Golf Ability Day is a chance for individuals  13-over with disabilities to get hands on experience learning the game of golf.

PGA pro Jay Hill will be giving instructions. to those that attend on Nov. 5 from 3-5 p.m. at Corbin Hills.

  The South Rowan Bible Teacher Association Golf Tournament is set for Nov. 17 at Irish Creek Golf Course in Kannapolis.

Registration and lunch catered by Olive Garden starts at 11 a.m. with a noon shotgun start.

The cost is $70 per player and  includes lunch.

The tournament raises money for Roxanne Johnson, who teaches a  Bible history course at South Rowan and Corriher-Lipe.

The association has funded 100 percent of the instructional costs of this position  for the past 30 years.

The annual golf tournament is the association’s primary fundraising effort.

Prizes will be given to the first-, second- and third-place teams, closest to the pin and longest drive.

College volleyball

Catawba Valley Community College swept Louisburg.

Aimee Cloninger (Carson) had 11 kills, eight digs and two aces. Tiffany Brooks (South Rowan) had four kills, nine digs and two blocks.

CVCC is 32-6 and 16-0 in conference play. Cloninger and Brooks were two of the sophomores the program recognized on Saturday.

CVCC will be the No. 1 seed for the Region X Tournament.

Hurley YMCA

The Hurley YMCA is looking for experienced and new officials to call games in youth basketball leagues for grades 2-8.

Games will be played from November to February.
