Area sports briefs: Soccer pairings are set

The NCHSAA released soccer state playoff pairings on Monday.

Salisbury is the No. 5 seed in the 2A West  and will play at home against  No. 28 North Surry on Tuesday at 6 p.m.

Tickets are $6. Only NCHSAA passes are permitted.

• Carson is the No. 4 seed in the 3A West bracket and will be at home against Gastonia Ashbrook in the first round.

The NCHSAA suggests Wednesday for first-round games but they can be moved up to Tuesday by mutual consent.

College soccer

Catawba women’s soccer seniors Allison Parker (West Rowan), Karen Presnell (Salisbury) and Katie Mathis (St. Stephens) will be honored at Tuesday’s game with Pfeiffer at Frock Field.

It could be their last home game.

College football

The SAC football players of the week are Lenoir-Rhyne running back Jarrod Spears, Tusculum defensive lineman Caushaud Lyons and Tusculum punter Hunter Cantrell.

Youth soccer

The Green Dragons FCCA U11 soccer team won two regional matches  8-0 and 2-0 over the weekend.

Scoring two goals for the Dragons (7-4-1)  were Maddox Goodnight, Bennett Clark, Colin Donaldson and Ben Childress.    Also scoring were Oscar Enciso and Luis Avilez.

  Outstanding play was recorded by Ben Sweet, Reed Brixey and Wade Robins.  Nick Antosek recorded two shutouts in goal.

Local golf

Davis Richards won the North Carolina Junior Golf Foundation’s Irish Creek Junior by shooting 62-72 — 134.

Nick Lyerly was second at 69-68 — 137.  Walker Cress was third at 69-70 — 139.

Logan Shuping tied for fifth with 74-68 — 142.

Stephen Carroll tied for seventh at  71-72-143.

• Cannon School freshman Michael Childress has been invited to play in the Dormie Cup in Pinehurst.

Prep football

West Charlotte football coach Mo Collins died on Sunday at 38.

Collins was a lineman in the NFL and played in the 2002 Super Bowl with the Oakland Raiders.

He was an assistant at West Charlotte in 2013 and became head coach this season.

College golf

Catawba is 13th after the first two rounds of the WGU Matt Dyas Invitational men’s golf tournament at the Oak Mountain Championship Golf Course.

Host West Georgia shot a 562 after Monday’s two rounds and leads Clayton State by 11 shots. Catawba turned in a two-round total of 603.

Tyler Rutherford is in ninth place individually. After a first round 76, the junior shot a five-under-par 67 in round two.

His 143 total is nine shots off the pace set by Delta State’s Reed Lindsey. Freshman Jeb Bennett had the best first round for the Indians with a 74 and posted a two-round total of 152.

  Catawba’s women are  in 10th place after the first round of the Flagler Fall Slam being held at the 6,062-yard, Par-72 Marsh Creek Country Club.

Madison Kennedy (Salisbury) led Catawba on Monday with a round of 79 and is in 20th place.

Freshman Anthea Gnielinski (Bremen, GERMANY/SZ Bordestrasse) posted a score of 80 and is 26th. Barry’s Francesca Perini holds the individual lead after a one-under-par 71. Jessica Bradley, of Lynn, is a shot back after a 72.

The tournament will conclude with another 18 holes on Tuesday.
