Center for Faith & the Arts is hosting an exhibit of paintings by a local artist who recently completed a residency in the Tuscany region of Italy.
“Mark Stephenson, Italian Paintings and Other Recent Works” opened on Sept. 2. Stephenson’s studio is located in downtown Salisbury and he is active in local and regional exhibits and organizations.
He was selected for a May 2014 artist residency at La Macina di San Cresci, Italy. As part of his trip, Mark also exhibited two paintings at the John Singer Sargent Art Competition in Broadway, England. One of the paintings sold to a local gallery owner, the other will be part of the CFA exhibit.
This was Stephenson’s first international residency. He has received recent recognitions or commissions from the Arts and Science Council, Rowan Arts Council, Carolina Artists Expo and the Portrait Society of America. Stephenson’s work can be seen in private homes throughout the country.
A reception and artist meet and greet session will be held at the Center for Faith & the Arts, 207 W. Harrison St., on Friday Oct. 3 from 6-9 p.m. The event is open to the public and will feature music by Marc Hoffman. The gallery is also open by appointment.

Friday: Registration begins 5 p.m. in front of Allied Finance, 231 S. Main St., and the walk itself begins 8 p.m. in the Lee Street parking lot behind Dead Ed’s and Nashville Nights. The walk, besides being great fun, is an attention-getting promotion for disaster awareness.
Special guests this year will include John Voldstad, best known for his role as “other brother Darryl” in the hit sitcom Newhart, as well as Larry Mainland and Sonya Thompson who have appeared on AMC’s The Walking Dead.
Uncle Buck’s All American Music Pub & Grub, 127 S. Main St., will host bands Made of Monuments, The Body Bags and Graveyard Boulevard during a grand finale celebrating the zombie parade to benefit the Humane Society of Rowan County and Mr. Mike’s Food Pantry.
Uncle Buck’s is also a stop on the zombie mead bar crawl beginning at the Salisbury Wine Shop. Register for the walk and receive a wrist band which includes a free entry to the after party and live music. For those not registered in the walk, there will be a $5 cover at the door. Bring non-perishable food items for donation.

The Catawba Singers and Chamber Singers, under the direction of Dr. Phillip Burgess, will present their fall concert “Choral Masterworks” at 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 5 in Omwake-Dearborn Chapel on the campus of Catawba College. The concert will feature music drawn from the Renaissance to the twentieth century, representing a wide variety of contrasting styles.
The program will be accompanied by Jacob Hahn and Susan Trivette on the piano, and Matthew Brown, organist.
The inspiration for this program came from a list of “100 must-do choral selections” compiled by choral directors from around the country and recently published in their national magazine, The Choral Journal. Composers represented include, Handel, Bach, Brahms and Durufle. Recent composers represented on the list and on the program are Brazilian composer Ernani Aguiar and Gospel composer Robert Ray.
The hour long concert is free and open to the public.
Spencer — Wine Down and Create, the self-proclaimed tongue-in-cheek Roaming Easels and Flying Brushes art class, will re-re-reopen at The Green Goat Art Gallery on Monday, Oct. 6 from 6 to 8 p.m. and meet on the first Monday of each month thereafter.
The Green Goat is located at 516 S. Salisbury Ave., across from the N.C. Train Museum.

CONCORD — Old Courthouse Theatre’s youth theater announces auditions for the Christmas play “On the Worst Day of Christmas,” based on the story by Judy Blume.

ASHEBORO — On Saturday Oct. 4 and Sunday Oct. 5 the streets of downtown Asheboro will fill with more than 400 arts and crafts vendors, in this, the 42nd annual festival. There will be food, music and much more. The event, coordinated by the Randolph Arts Guild, is a celebration of culture and community.
New this year, festivities will start Friday night Oct. 3rd at 6 p.m. with kick-off concert featuring Brooke McBride and headlined by Bantum Rooster.
