HUNTERSVILLE — Daveon Perry was the man for A.L. Brown in the Mecka 4A opener. Perry returned a fumble for a touchdown, and he returned a punt for a touchdown Friday to push the Wonders to a 33-12 victory at North Mecklenburg. Perry also had a big return after an interception as the Wonders rolled to the win.
“He had a huge game for us,” head coach Mike Newsome said.
Leading the Wonders on the ground was running back Sandon McCoy. Newsome said McCoy had double-digit carries for more than 100 yards.
Quarterback Damon Johnson and receiver Brylon Weeks also hooked up for a touchdown.
It’s early, but the Wonders’ game Friday was a must win if they want to contend for a playoff spot out of the top-heavy Mecka conference.
“All in all, it was a good win for us,” Newsome said. “Anytime you get a conference win, we’ll take it because our conference is so tough.”
The Wonders are at home next week against Vance. The Cougars dispatched Jay M. Robinson 56-13 on Friday.
Keenan Black and Rocky Reid did the damage Friday against East Rowan. Keenan Black threw for two touchdowns, and Reid ran for two touchdowns as the Spiders’ beat the Mustangs 29-12 at E.Z. Smith Field at Bailey Stadium. Reid’s 5-yard touchdown run combined with a two-point conversion put the Mustangs ahead 8-0 in the first quarter.
East Rowan fought back later in the period when receiver Seth Wyrick and quarterback Samuel Wyrick hooked up for a 66-yard touchdown pass. That cut the lead to 8-6.
The Spiders got a touchdown pass by Black with 3 minutes, 13 seconds left in the second quarter, but the extra point ricocheted off the goalpost. Concord was up 14-6 at halftime.
Concord pulled away late in the third quarter. Black was under pressure from the Mustangs’ defense. He scrambled, stumbled, and still had the ability to get a 25-yard touchdown pass out of it. The two-point conversion was good for a 22-6 lead with 3:40 left in the period.
A mistake by the Mustangs allowed the Spiders to make their lead insurmountable going into the final 12 minutes. The third quarter ended with a personal foul called on East Rowan. The ball was moved down to the East Rowan 5. On the untimed play, Reid found the end zone for a 29-6 lead.
In the fourth quarter, Samuel Wyrick and Max Wall connected for a touchdown to cut the Spiders’ lead to 29-12.
East Rowan is at home this coming week for a South Piedmont Conference game against Hickory Ridge. The Raging Bulls earned a big confernece win over Central Cabarrus on Friday.
