SALISBURY — Jake Alexander Boulevard will be getting a new section of sidewalk.
Salisbury City Council has approved a N.C. Department of Transportation proposal to install roughly 1,500 feet of sidewalk between Rowan Tech Road and Klumac Road.
The new sidewalk, which the DOT will pay for, will be on the south side of Jake Alexander Boulevard.
City Engineer Wendy Brindle added there are no major utilities in the area that will have to be moved and no rights of way to be purchased.
In another city matter, Senior Planner Trey Cleaton reviewed for council Tuesday the Consolidated Annual Planning and Evaluation Report (CAPER) for the city’s Community Development Block Grant and HOME programs.
The city received $432,000 in funding under the programs in 2013-14, and the CAPER report on how that money was spent is due to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development by Sept. 28.
The money goes toward owner-occupied and emergency housing rehabilitations. Examples over the past fiscal year were 1309 W. Horah St., and 624 and 721 E. Franklin St.
Funding helped in demolitions, such as removal of an old service station at 1131 N. Main St. Pedestrian improvements were made at West Cemetery Street and Mocksville Avenue.
The community development money also assisted Rowan Helping Ministries, Family Crisis Council, Community Care Clinic, Salisbury’s Youth Employment Program and Salisbury Housing Authority’s family self-sufficiency program.
A city contribution to Phase I of the new Civic Park Apartments came from community development funds, and it also was used to provide home ownership and foreclosure prevention counseling.
