Dr. Lynn Marsh was appointed to Rowan-Cabarrus Community College’s board of trustees by Rowan County commissioners to serve on the board through 2018.
“I am so pleased to get to work more closely with Rowan-Cabarrus Community College. I believe in the good work that they’re doing, and I’m excited to develop a stronger relationship with the college and its mission in the community through this appointment,” said Marsh, who currently serves as principal of W.R. Odell Elementary School in Cabarrus County.
Born in Atlanta, Georgia, Marsh has been a resident of Rowan County for most of her life. Before entering the educational arena, she worked in banking and customer service at Food Town, now Food Lion. Being personally familiar with working, raising a family and going to school all at the same time, Marsh will relate to many of the college’s students.
“I feel that Rowan-Cabarrus is vital to Rowan and Cabarrus counties in the advancement of our workforce and the enrichment of our communities,” said Marsh. “I have worked in education for over 25 years in both Rowan and Cabarrus counties. I’m very in tune with community college career training programs and am eager to become more involved.”
Marsh has been actively involved in the community, serving on several community boards including the Juvenile Crime Prevention Board, Rowan Families in Action, and the ARC. She created and maintains two “Kids Smiley Zone” reading centers at Novant Health Rowan and the Terrie Hess House Child Advocacy Center. She is passionate about helping all children have a fair chance to be successful in life.
Marsh graduated from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte with a bachelor’s degree in elementary and special education in 1988. She also holds master’s degrees in learning disabilities and school administration from UNC-Charlotte, obtained in 1996 and 1998, respectively. She received her doctorate in business administration in 2008 from Warren National University.
Rowan-Cabarrus board of trustees members are responsible for attending all board meetings and key Rowan-Cabarrus events. As a board, they are responsible for college policies.
“I am very pleased to have Dr. Marsh joining our board. Her expertise, connections and insight are invaluable, and we know the college will benefit from her leadership,” said Carl M. Short, chairman of the Rowan-Cabarrus board of trustees.
Appointments to the boar of trustees are liaisons to the public of the entire service area and not to the appointing entity. Once appointed, trustees are to carry out their duties as established by the General Statutes of North Carolina and the board’s bylaws and policies. They are to carry out those responsibilities independent of concern for any group, organization, appointing board or political entity other than the students, citizens of the service area, and the college.
Marsh and her husband of 44 years, Donnie, are members of Christ United Methodist Church in Salisbury. They have two children and five grandchildren.
