UWHARRIE NATIONAL FOREST — The entire Uwharrie National Forest is a history of the area since pre-historic times.
Some of the significant, and much later, sites are:
• Lawrenceville
Located about a quarter mile from the Uwharrie Trail head on N.C. 24/27, it’s an easy walk to the remnants of the former county seat of Montgomery County. The land was acquired and the trail built by the LandTrust for Central North Carolina. Anthropologists from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte are researching the site to determine the layout of the streets and what the community looked like in the 1700s. Foundations of some buildings and the town well have been identified.
