NEW YORK (AP) — Yordano Ventura and the Kansas City Royals turned Derek Jeter Day into another disappointing defeat for the New York Yankees’ captain in the dwindling days of his career.
Ventura pitched three-hit ball into the seventh inning, and the AL Central leaders beat the Yankees 2-0 Sunday on a pair of unearned runs for their second shutout in the three-game series.
Kansas City scored due to errors by pitcher Shane Greene (4-3) in the second inning and right fielder Carlos Beltran in the third. The Royals, who won 1-0 Friday night on an unearned run following an error by third baseman Chase Headley, went 4-3 against the Yankees this year to take the season series for the first time since 1999.
Ventura (12-9) won his third straight start, leaving after a leadoff walk in the seventh. With closer Greg Holland sidelined by a strained right triceps, Aaron Crow, Kelvin Herrera and Wade Davis combined for one-hit relief.
Pitching on his 29th birthday, Davis got his second save of the series — and his big league career.
Jeter, who is retiring at the end of the season, went 1 for 3 with a first-inning single and a third-inning walk. Before the game, he was honored during a 45-minute ceremony on the field that included NBA great Michael Jordan and baseball ironman Cal Ripken Jr.
ANGELS 14, TWINS 4
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Mike Trout hit his 32nd homer, C.J. Wilson recovered from a slow start and Los Angeles completed a season sweep of Minnesota.
Howie Kendrick, who had three hits and four RBIs, and C.J. Cron also homered for Los Angeles. The AL West leaders had a season-high 19 hits and completed their fifth four-game sweep this season, extending a franchise record. They finished 7-0 against the Twins.
Wilson (11-9) walked three straight batters to start the second. All three came around to score, giving Minnesota a 3-1 lead, but the left-hander retired 13 of his next 14 hitters.
Trout hit a two-run homer in the third off rookie Logan Darnell (0-2). Kendrick had a two-run triple in the fifth, and Cron launched a two-run shot off reliever A.J. Achter in a six-run sixth.
DODGERS 7, DIAMONDBACKS 2
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Adrian Gonzalez hit a pair of three-run homers to reach 100 RBIs for the seventh time, and the Los Angeles Dodgers beat Arizona after Trevor Cahill held them hitless for more than five innings.
Zack Greinke (14-8) gave up two runs and six hits before he was lifted for a pinch-hitter during the Dodgers’ three-run sixth. The 2009 AL Cy Young Award winner is 5-0 with a 1.59 ERA in his last six starts against the Diamondbacks.
Dee Gordon ended Cahill’s no-hit bid with a one-out double in the sixth. Hanley Ramirez walked on four pitches and Gonzalez smacked a 3-1 delivery over the center-field fence.
Gonzalez, whose six RBIs tied a career high, made it 6-2 in the seventh against Oliver Perez with his 22nd homer. Matt Kemp homered on Perez’s next pitch.
Cahill (3-11) yielded three runs, two hits and four walks in 5 2-3 innings. The right-hander went 0-4 in four starts against the Dodgers this season, allowing 20 earned runs in 17 innings.
Los Angeles won the season series 15-4.
MARLINS 4, BRAVES 0
MIAMI (AP) — Brad Hand pitched six sharp innings and Jarrod Saltalamacchia drove in two runs to lead Miami over Atlanta.
Hand (3-6) gave up five hits and struck out three. Donovan Solano and Marcell Ozuna each drove in a run for the Marlins, who won two of three in the series.
Atlanta starter Julio Teheran (13-11) allowed four runs and eight hits in 5 1-3 innings. In a tight race for the second NL wild card, the Braves have lost four of five and been shut out four times in their past eight games.
INDIANS 2, WHITE SOX 0
CLEVELAND (AP) — Carlos Carrasco came within one out of his first complete game, and Cleveland finished a three-game sweep of Chicago.
Carrasco (7-4) allowed four hits, struck out eight and didn’t walk a batter in 8 2-3 innings, extending his remarkable turnaround since rejoining the rotation last month.
Cody Allen entered with two on and retired Conor Gillaspie for his 19th save.
Carrasco is 4-0 and has allowed three earned runs in 38 2-3 innings over six starts since Aug. 10.
Michael Brantley’s RBI single in the first put Cleveland ahead. Carlos Santana added a run-scoring groundout in the eighth.
Scott Carroll (5-10) held the Indians to two runs in eight-plus innings, but received no help from his offense. Chicago scored two runs in the series and has lost 14 of 18.
RANGERS 1, MARINERS 0
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Derek Holland pitched seven impressive innings in his second start off the disabled list, and Texas beat Seattle to snap an eight-game losing streak.
The Rangers gave interim manager Tim Bogar his first victory in his third game since Ron Washington resigned. Seattle, which had won five in a row, finished a 5-2 road trip.
Shawn Tolleson worked the eighth, and Neftali Feliz completed the seven-hitter for his eighth save.
Feliz pitched out of trouble after a walk and Kyle Seager’s single put runners on first and third with one out. James Jones popped out and pinch-hitter Justin Smoak flied out.
Texas scored on Adrian Beltre’s sixth-inning sacrifice fly against starter James Paxton (5-2). Leonys Martin had three hits, including a triple, and scored the only run.
Holland (1-0) allowed six hits and no walks while striking out five. He missed the first five months of the season following offseason knee surgery.
ROCKIES 6, PADRES 0
DENVER (AP) — Nolan Arenado homered and Franklin Morales pitched six spotless innings for his first win in two months as Colorado defeated San Diego.
Jackson Williams hit his first major league home run for the Rockies, who swept a three-game series for the first time since June 13-15 in San Francisco.
Colorado has won four straight, its longest streak since winning five in a row against Atlanta and the Giants in June. It was the Rockies’ first three-game sweep at home this season.
Padres starter Tyson Ross (13-13) allowed three runs and seven hits while striking out seven in 5 2-3 innings.
Morales (6-7) scattered four hits and walked two. He had been 0-3 with five no-decisions since beating San Diego on July 8.
ORIOLES 7, RAYS 5, 11 INNINGS
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Nelson Cruz hit his second homer of the game in the 11th inning and drove in seven runs, and AL East-leading Baltimore avoided a three-game sweep.
After Nick Hundley drew a one-walk in the 11th, Cruz drove the next pitch from Cesar Ramos (2-6) over the wall in center for his 39th homer. Cruz has 101 RBIs this season.
Brad Brach (6-1) worked a scoreless 10th before Andrew Miller got three outs for his first save.
Baltimore increased its margin in the division to 9 1/2 games over the New York Yankees, who lost 2-0 to Kansas City.
Evan Longoria, James Loney, David DeJesus and Kevin Kiermaier homered for the Rays.
PIRATES 10, CUBS 4
CHICAGO (AP) — Andrew McCutchen hit one of Pittsburgh’s four homers, and the Pirates moved into the second NL wild-card slot.
The Pirates swept the three-game series against the last-place Cubs to improve to 12-4 against Chicago this season, including 7-2 at Wrigley Field. Coupled with Milwaukee’s 9-1 loss to St. Louis, they moved a half-game ahead of the Brewers for the last wild card.
Neil Walker hit a two-run shot in the first and Jordy Mercer and McCutchen connected in consecutive at-bats in the second. Even pitcher Gerrit Cole (8-5) got into the act, belting a two-run drive in the seventh for his first major league homer.
Chicago had won three in a row before the visit from Pittsburgh. Travis Wood (8-12) was tagged for seven runs and nine hits in 1 2-3 innings.
CARDINALS 9, BREWERS 1
MILWAUKEE (AP) — Adam Wainwright pitched a seven-hitter for St. Louis, and Peter Boujos had a key two-run triple.
The Cardinals took three of four in the series at Miller Park to open a five-game lead on Milwaukee. The Brewers have lost 11 of 12.St. Louis grabbed a 4-0 lead with four runs in the fourth against rookie Jimmy Nelson (2-7).
It was more than enough support for Wainwright (17-9), who is tied for the major league lead in victories. The right-hander struck out three.
NATIONALS 3, PHILLIES 2
WASHINGTON (AP) — Adam LaRoche homered twice, and Washington avoided a series sweep.
Scott Hairston hit a go-ahead sacrifice fly off Philadelphia ace Cole Hamels (8-7) in the sixth inning. Hairston started in place of Bryce Harper because of his stellar numbers against the left-hander, who combined with three relievers for a no-hitter against Atlanta in his previous start.
Gio Gonzalez (8-9) allowed two runs in six-plus innings for the Nationals, who had lost five straight against the Phillies. Washington pushed its NL East lead over Atlanta back to seven games.
Drew Storen pitched a perfect ninth for his second save.
ASTROS 4, ATHLETICS 3
OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — The Astros scored two runs in the ninth without a hit, including Dexter Fowler’s bases-loaded walk for the tiebreaking run.
Jose Veras (4-0) pitched 1 2-3 scoreless innings as the Astros (63-80) took the rubber game of the weekend series. The victory means Houston’s streak of 100-loss seasons ends at three.
Nate Freiman hit a two-run homer in the seventh to give the A’s a 3-2 lead. Oakland went on to load the bases but Veras wiggled out of the jam.
Ryan Cook (1-3) got the loss, walking three of his four batters.
Josh Fields struck out Josh Donaldson for his third save.
BLUE JAYS 3, RED SOX 1
BOSTON (AP) — Jose Bautista hit a three-run homer and R.A. Dickey pitched into the eighth inning, carrying Toronto to the victory.
Adam Lind added three hits for the Blue Jays, who dropped the first two games of the series after five consecutive wins. The Blue Jays moved within five games of Seattle for the AL’s second wild card.
Xander Bogaerts had an RBI single for the Red Sox.
Dickey (12-12) allowed one run and six hits. Casey Janssen tossed a perfect ninth for his 22nd save.
Boston’s Rubby De La Rosa (4-6) gave up three runs and seven hits in four-plus innings. The right-hander is 0-2 with a 6.20 ERA in his last five starts.
METS 4, REDS 3
CINCINNATI (AP) — Curtis Granderson and Anthony Recker homered, and the Mets scored four unearned runs.
Zach Wheeler (10-9) pitched six solid innings, improving to 7-1 with a 2.21 ERA over his last 13 starts. The right-hander allowed one run and five hits.
The Reds began the day with a major league-low 62 errors. But center fielder Billy Hamilton dropped a fly ball in New York’s three-run sixth, and first baseman Jack Hannahan flubbed Granderson’s foul popup in the eighth. Granderson then hit a solo shot for his 18th homer.
Jenrry Mejia worked a rocky ninth for his 24th save.
Mat Latos (5-5) struck out five in six innings for Cincinnati. He allowed three runs and seven hits.
