Pfeiffer welcomes new faculty

With the start of the 2014-15 academic year, Pfeiffer University announces the addition of 10 full-time faculty members, including six additions to its Misenheimer campus, as well as a new dean for the division of arts and sciences.
“Our newest professors complement and add depth to Pfeiffer’s excellent faculty,” said Dr. Tracy Espy, provost and dean of academic affairs.
“Their credentials, qualifications and commitment to excellence will certainly enrich the experience of Pfeiffer students.”
Pfeiffer welcomes the following new dean and professors to the Misenheimer campus:
Marilyn Sutton-Haywood — Sutton-Haywood joins Pfeiffer as dean of the division of arts and sciences from Shaw University in Raleigh, where she was vice president for academic affairs and professor of biology. Sutton-Haywood has held similar administrative and classroom positions at Bethune-Cookman University in Daytona Beach, Fla. and Johnson C. Smith University, Charlotte. She has experience in faculty development, teaching strategies and student learning outcomes. She holds a bachelor’s degree from North Carolina Central University and master’s and doctoral degrees from Clark Atlanta University.
Heather Burkard — Burkard is an assistant professor of sociology and criminal justice, bringing forensic science and criminology experience in higher education, the public and the private sector. In addition to teaching at Central Piedmont Community College and St. Leo University in St. Leo, Fla., she has worked for the Cabarrus County District Attorney’s Office, Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department and others as a crime scene and forensic investigator. She holds a bachelor’s degree from St. Leo University, master’s degree from National University in La Jolla, Calif., and doctorate from Capella University.
Anamaria Calincan Dickson — Dickson is an assistant professor of finance. She most recently taught at Minnesota State University-Mankato and also has experience as a tax preparer. Dickson is on track to receive certification as a certified financial analyst and complete requirements later this year for the doctoral program in finance at the University of Missouri-Columbia.
Jason Emory — Emory is an assistant professor of chemistry. Most recently, he was visiting assistant professor at Simpson College in Indianola, Ia., preceded by a post-doctoral research position with Colorado State University and a teaching position at Louisiana State University. He holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in chemistry from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and a doctorate from Louisiana State University.
Laura Hudson — Hudson is a visiting assistant professor of biology. Last year, she served as a general biology lab coordinator and adjunct instructor for the university. Hudson brings teaching experience from Rowan-Cabarrus Community College, Duke University, North Carolina State University and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, as well as private sector experience as a research scientist for Soymeds, Inc., based in Charlotte. She holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, master’s degree from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville and a doctorate from North Carolina State University.
Charles Meadows III — Meadows, an assistant professor of communications, brings a public relations component to Pfeiffer’s communications program. He has taught at St. Andrews University in Laurinburg and the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. He holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Appalachian State University and a doctorate from the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa.
Marissa Schwalm — Schwalm, an assistant professor of English, is a published poet and journal editor. She comes to Pfeiffer from Binghamton University in Binghamton, New York. Prior teaching, her experience was at St. Paul’s Advanced Studies Program in Concord, New Hampshire; Colorado Technical University; F.L. Chamberlain School in Middleboro, Massechussetes and Greater Works Outreach Academy. She holds a bachelor’s degree from LeMoyne College in Syracuse, N.Y.; master’s degree from Chatham University in Pittsburgh, Pa. and a doctorate from Binghamton University.
