Miller-Dyer top qualifiers

Qualifying concluded for the Crowder-Dorsett Memorial 4-Ball Labor Day Golf Tournament at the Country Club of Salisbury on Sunday.
David Miller-Jon Dyer posted a 64 on Friday and that score held up against all challengers.
As qualifying medalists, Miller and Dyer are the No. 2 seed in the 16-team Championship Flight. Top-seeded are defending champions Jake Kennedy and Davis Richards.
Shooting 65s in qualifying were the teams of Steve Gegorek-Nick Lyerly, Corey Basinger-Steven Harvey and Lee Frick-Blake Wray. The team of Ken Clarke-Chris Owen shot 66.
The team of Jim Christy-Jim Hubbard shot 70 and took the final spot in the Championship Flight by winning a playoff on the second hole.
In addition to the Championship Flight, qualifiers filled eight-team brackets for 10 more flights.
In the Senior Championship Flight, the team of John Kyger-John Henderlite led qualifying with a 71.
In the Super Senior Champioship Flight,the team of Gene Corry-Bryce Beard led qualifying with a 68.
The team of Kristi Laton-Phyllis Durland shot 74 to pace qualifiers in the Women’s Flight.

The pre-Rowan County Cross Country Meet will be Tuesday at Dan Nicholas Park. The boys race will be held at 4 p.m., with the girls race to follow.
The Rowan County Cross Country Meet will be on Wednesday, Sept. 24, at Dan Nicholas Park.
The McCanless Couples played with a Captain’s Choice format Sunday.
The team of Scott Perry, Harry Owens, David Huneycutt and Don Goodnight won.
Second place went to the team of Bryan Reynolds, Frank Foster, Gene Seaford and Mary Seaford
Longest putt was won by Huneycutt.
• In the Joe Cheves Junior Invitational at Mimosa Hills in Morganton,
Nick Lyerly shot 68-70 — 138 and tied for eighth.
Michael Childress shot 71-72 — 143 and tied for 30th.
Walker Cress shot 71-77 — 148.
Davis Richards came back from a first-round 80 to shoot 68 and finished tied for 53rd at 148.
Richards was the winner of the Carter Cheves Scholarship that is presented to a high school senior who qualified for the tournament.
The scholarship is based on exemplary character and integrity and a genuine desire to help others.
Richards met the other criteria of exhibiting dedication to golf and showing the desire and ability to play at the highest level.
Richards is a senior at South Rowan. He’s committed to N.C. State.
Girls
In the Joe Cheves Junior Invitational, Grace Yatawara shot 75-72 — 147 and tied for 13th in the girls division.
Isabella Rusher shot 73-76 — 149 and tied for 19th.
Carley Cox shot 83-83 — 166.
One day after homering twice for Kannapolis, Eddy Alvarez collected four hits, a career-high, to pace the Kannapolis Intimidators to a 7-1 road win against the West Virginia Power.
Alvarez, who won a silver medal in the 5,000-meter relay in short-track speed-skating in Sochi in February, finished 4-for-6 with a pair of two-run singles as Kannapolis scored a run in the sixth, two in the seventh, and three in the eighth.

Chris Freudenberg (2-1) tossed 6.0 strong innings to earn the win. The left-hander limited the Power to a run on four hits while walking two and striking out five. Brad Salgado tossed the final 3.0 innings for Kannapolis, keeping West Virginia off the scoreboard while striking out three to earn a save (3).
Kannapolis struck first in the first inning. Christian Stringer doubled down the right field line with one out, and Danny Hayes followed with an RBI-single for a 1-0 lead.
