Uniform policies specific to each school

Most elementary and all middle schools in the Rowan-Salisbury system have some sort of uniform policy. In general, students can toss their flip-flops in the closet and hang up their jeans and denim jackets.
And few, if any of the schools named below allow any sort of head covering — not hats, scarves, doo-rags, combs, picks or bandanas.
All outdoor coats must be placed in lockers when entering school — they are not allowed in the classroom.
Sag and drag pants are not allowed. Neither are sweatpants or knit pants, or items of clothing with any kind of logo other than approved school names or symbols.
Elementary schools that require uniforms: Cleveland, Granite Quarry, Hanford-Dole, Isenberg, Knollwood, Koontz, Landis North Rowan, Overton and Shive elementary schools.
Middle schools: China Grove, Corriher Lipe, Erwin, Knox, North Rowan, Southeast, West Rowan.
Cleveland wears solid navy blue, solid black or solid khaki bottoms. Boys may wear slack and shorts. Girls may wear slacks, capris, shorts, jumpers, dresses, skirts and skorts. Polo style uniform dresses may be in any solid color.
No cargo or corduroy bottom wear. No writing, rivets, labels, sequins or decorations on bottom wear.
Uniform shirts may be any solid color and must have a collar. The only logo permitted is Cleveland Elementary or Cleveland Eagles. All shirts must be tucked in.
Undershirts must be either a solid-color T-shirt or turtleneck.
Sweatshirts, cardigans and sweaters are allowed; hoods are not allowed.
Shoes must be closed toed and closed heels. Laces must be laced and tied. Socks must be solid colors and matching.
Headgear will be confiscated.
Granite Quarry bottoms must be solid navy or tan khaki, long pants or shorts for boys; girls may wear long pants, shorts, capri pants, jumpers, skirts or skorts. Leggings or tights must be solid color. Only brown or black belts permitted; no oversize buckles.
Shirts may be any solid color and must have a collar. No logos except Granite Quarry. PTA approved Granite Quarry spirit shirts may be worn on Friday only. Long or short sleeved undershirts are allowed, in any color. White, red or navy turtlenecks only under polo shirts.
Tennis shoes are required and should be flat, with closed toe and heel. No wheels. No open heeled slides, mule tennis shoes or Mary Janes.
Sweatshirts are allowed in any solid color.
Necklaces must be worn under shirts. Gel bracelets and sweatbands are not permitted. No studded or spiked heels.
Hanford-Dole students may wear any solid color, collared polo shirt with long or short sleeves. Long shirt tails must be tucked in. Sweatshirts or sweaters must be a solid color. Other jackets or sweaters may not be worn in the building after school begins at 7:55 a.m. No oversized hoodies or sweatshirts.
Khaki, navy blue or black pants or shorts that reach the knee are allowed. Belts are optional.
Girls may wear khaki, navy blue or black skirts, capris or jumpers that are knee-length.
Only closed toe and heeled shoes. Tights and socks of any color.
At Isenberg, shirts and blouses may be any solid color, polo style with collar, long or short sleeves. Turtlenecks may be any solid color.
Pants and shirts may be navy blue, black or khaki. Shorts must be mid-thigh or longer. Solid color sweater and sweatshirts. Belts are required if pants have belt loops.
Girls’ skirts, shorts, capris or culottes must be navy blue or khaki, and tights must be plain navy blue, black, white or khaki. No patterns or designs on socks or tights. Closed toe and closed heel shoes. Jewelry may not be distracting or dangerous.
No logos but Isenberg, no spandex, yoga pants or hoodies. Shirts must be tucked in.
For Knollwood, bottom wear must be solid navy blue or tan khaki, no labels, logos or decoration. Boys may wear long pants or shorts. Girls may wear long pants, shorts, capris, jumpers, skirts or skorts. Black or brown belt, plain, with pants that have belt loops. All bottom wear must be no shorter than 2-inches above the knee.
Shirts must be classic red, navy blue or Oxford gray and must have a collar — polo or button up — and must be tucked in. Undershirts or turtlenecks must be uniform colors or white, with no logos. Sweatshirts, cardigans and sweaters must be classic red, navy blue or Oxford gray.
Jackets worn inside must be uniform colors. Jackets that are not uniform colors may not be worn in the building.
Shoes should be closed toes and heeled and must be tennis shoes. Socks and leggings must be solid white, navy blue or red. Necklaces may be worn under shirts.
At Koontz, shirts and blouses may be any solid color, polo style with collar, long or short sleeves. Turtlenecks may be any solid color.
Pants and shorts, skirts, skorts, capris, cullottes and jumpers must be navy blue or khaki. Shorts must be mid-thigh or longer. Sweaters and sweatshirts must be a solid color. Pants with belt loops must be worn with belts.
Tights and socks may be any solid color, with no patterns or designs. Closed toe and closed heel shoes. No denim of any kind, no sweatpants, spandex or yoga pants or hoodies.
Sweaters and light jackets in appropriate solid colors may be worn.
Landis requires solid color polo or button (Oxford) shirts, short or long sleeves. Slacks and shorts, skirts, skorts, capris, cullottes or jumpers in navy blue or khaki. Any solid color crewneck, V-neck, cardigan or vest with collared shirt allowed. Any solid color sweatshirt, no hoodies, with collared shirt. Socks can be any solid color and must match; no pattern or design allowed. Tennis shoes required. Sweaters and light jackets in solid colors acceptable.
For North Rowan Elementary, any solid color polo shirt, turtleneck, white or blue Oxford shirts, long or short sleeves may be worn.
Solid navy blue or khaki pants, shorts, skirts, skorts, capris, cullottes and jumpers. Solid color tights. Any solid color sweater or sweatshirt, crewneck, V-neck, cardigan, vest or official North Rowan Elementary shirt allowed; must be worn with collared shirt. Pants with belt loops must have belts.
Shirts must be tucked in. Closed toe and heel shoes such as tennis shoes.
At Overton, shirts and blouses must be solid red, white or navy blue with collar or turtleneck, short or long sleeve. Solid navy blue dress pants or walking shorts required. Solid red, navy blue or white sweaters or sweatshirts, crewneck, V-neck, cardigan or vest allowed.
Girls may wear skirts, skorts, dresses, cullottes, jumpers or capri pants in solid navy blue. Tights may be solid red, navy blue or white.
Tennis shoes/sneakers, hiking or cross trainers with good tread or boots with deep rubberized tread for winter acceptable.
For Shive, bottom wear must be khaki or navy blue, slacks, sorts, capris, jumpers, skirts or skorts. Belts optional. All bottom wear must be no shorter than 2 inches above the knees. No corduroy pants; cargo pants are allowed.
Shirts must be classic red, navy blue or yellow and have collars, button-up or polo, long or short sleeves. Undershirts, white T-shirt or turtleneck.
Sweaters, sweatshirts and cardigans may be classic red, navy blue or yellow. No logos except Shive Elementary or Shive Stingers. Sweatshirts may have hoods, but no hoods can be worn inside the building.
Shoes must be closed toes and closed heels, and laces must be strung properly and tied securely. No shoes with wheels. Socks must be solid white, red, blue, yellow or black. Necklaces must be worn under shirts.
China Grove uniforms are color-coded by grade. Polo or Oxford shirts must be worn. No see-through material. Shirts outside pants can be no longer than extended fingertips held at the side. All shirts longer than that must be tucked in. T-shirts under uniform shirts may not have sleeves that extend beyond the uniform shirt. Grade level turtlenecks may be worn in place of uniform shirts in winter.
Sixth grade will wear navy blue; seventh grade will wear hunter/forest green; eighth grade will wear red shirts.
Boys and girls may wear khaki knee-length or longer pants, girls may wear pleated A-line skirts or jumpers, knee length or longer. No overly long belts. Corduroy pants are allowed in the correct color. On jeans days, students may wear blue denim — no other color.
Sweaters, sweatshirts and hoodies must be solid and grade color. Uniform shirts must be worn at all times. Any other sweater, sweatshirt or hoodie that is not uniform color must be left in the student locker.
Flip-flips, slides or bedroom shoes not permitted. No baggy or oversize coats, No coats worn in class or in building. Jackets, if worn in class, must be solid, grade level colors, gray or black.
Corriher-Lipe shirts must be polo shirt with a collar. Sixth grade will wear hunter or kelly green (not fluorescent); seventh grade, royal or navy blue, no Carolina blue; eighth grade, red or burgundy, (no pink). Shirts may be tucked in. Nothing should hang below uniform shirt. No accessorizing. Undershirts may be solid white, black or grey or grade level color. Undershirts must be tucked in. On game days, school athletes may wear team shirts or jerseys that comply with the uniform code.
Boys and girls may wear plain, solid khaki or solid black knee-length or longer pants or shorts with no decoration. Girls may wear knee-length or longer skirts, dresses or jumpers. No leggings allowed. No nylon, terry cloth, fleece, fur, spandex, silk, velour or lycra bottoms. No overalls or yoga pants. Nothing tight or revealing.
Cargo shorts or pants in appropriate colors and fabrics permitted.
No overlong belts or belts that could be used as a weapon.
Sweatshirts must be solid gray, black or white or a school-sponsored sweatshirt. They must be crewneck and worn over the uniform shirt with the collar out. Sweatshirts may also be grade-level color.
No gloves worn in the classroom.
Athletic shoes are recommended; all shoes closed toes and heels; boot heels less than two inches. Tie shoes must be tied.
Necklaces must be worn under the shirt. No jewelry or armbands containing messages. No jewelry that could be used as a weapon.
No bookbags in the classrooms. Book bags must be stored in lockers at all times. Gym wear must be in a plastic grocery bag or approved spirit bag.
Erwin sixth grade wears light blue polo shirts; seventh, yellow; eighth, navy blue. Short or long sleeve polos. Undershirt may be white or the same color as uniform shirt. Undershirt visible at neck only.
Sweatshirts must have Erwin Middle School logo or match uniform grade-level color, or be plain navy blue or gray. No zippered, buttoned or hooded sweatshirts.
Khaki or navy slacks, finger-tip length shorts. Girls may wear finger-tip level skirts, jumpers or capris.
No sandals, open heeled, open toes shoes or flip-flops. No heeled shoes. No sweaters, bedroom shoes, chains, studded or spiked jewelry, ripped or torn clothing.
Knox polo shirts must be in grade-level colors. Sixth grade, red; seventh, royal blue; eighth grade, navy blue. Undershirts solid color, no visible graphics.
Bottoms, navy blue or khaki pants, shorts, capris or skirts. Shorts and skirts no more than 2 inches above the knee. Grade level color sweaters, sweatshirts or fleece allowed, or Knox hoodies or royal blue sweatshirts.
Enclosed shoes at both heel and toe, laces tied. All hats and head coverings must be removed on arrival at school. Jewelry must be discreet. Winter wear, such as a hat, toboggan, gloves or scarf must be stored in a locker.
North Rowan Middle bottom wear may be solid khaki or solid navy blue. Slacks or shorts, capris, jumpers, skirts or skorts. Shorts and skirts must be knee-length. Belts must be worn on pants with belt loops. No leggings under shorts or skirts. No skin, underwear or shorts may show above pants while standing or sitting.
Shirts are kelly green for eighth grade; royal blue for seventh and red for sixth grade. Must be collared polo shirt, long or short sleeves. No logos but North Rowan. Undershirts may be solid white or light gray, crewneck or turtleneck.
Shirt tails and camisole bottoms may not show.
Crewneck or hooded sweatshirts, non-zippered, and button down sweaters permitted, matching the grade-level color.
No coats, jackets, purses or drawstring bags in the classrooms. Must be placed in a locker when arriving at school. Closed heel and toe shoes, laced up and tied if laces are present.
No lanyards or chains or exposed keys.
Southeast wears grade-level color shirts, burgundy shirts with khaki or navy pants for sixth grade; hunter green for seventh; navy blue for eighth. Must have collar, long or short sleeves. A shirt worn with the polo must be solid white or gray or the color of the uniform. All shirts must be tucked in, Turtlenecks allowed in the correct color, without polo shirt.
Sweatshirts and/or sweaters must match grade level, with collared or turtleneck shirt underneath.
Pants, shorts or skirts must be khaki or navy blue, knee-length or longer. P.E. uniforms must be worn during P.E. class.
At West Rowan MIddle, solid khaki or navy blue bottom wear, slacks, shorts, capris, jumpers, skirts or skorts allowed. Shorts and skirts must be knee-length. No skin, underwear or shorts may show above pants while standing or sitting.
No leggings under skirts. Socks solid navy, white, gray black or tan. If wearing more than one pair of socks, they must be same color. Boots only under pants.
Shirts are light blue for eighth grade, navy blue for seventh grade, red for sixth grade. Must be collared, polo or Oxford style. Undershirts must be solid white or gray. Crewneck or turtleneck. Undershirts must be tucked in.
Sweatshirts, if worn correctly, are the only outerwear allowed in classrooms. No coats, jackets, purses or drawstring bags. They must be placed in locker immediately on arrival to school. No hooded or zippered sweatshirts. Must be white, gray, navy or uniform color. Worn with collar of shirt showing.
Closed toe and heel shoes; all laces must be tight and tied. Socks must be a solid uniform color, navy, white, gray, black or tan.
No graffiti on clothes or body. Necklaces under shirts. No lanyards or chains. Keys placed in locker or pockets, not visible. Drawstring bags may be worn to the gym on Monday and back to the hallway on Friday after exploratory classes.
