Collins qualifies for Wyndham

Will Collins (Salisbury) qualified at Bermuda Run for this week’s PGA Wyndham Championship at Sedgefield.
It’s the first PGA event for which the former Virgina star has qualified.
Collins shot 5-under 66 and was one of four qualifiers. Jesse Hutchins of Statesville led the qualifiers with a sizzling 7-under 64.
Collins will tee off at 2:15 p.m. on Thursday.
• Three local junior golfers are playing in the season-ending Tournament of Champions at the Hyland Course in Pinehurst.
Ben Childress shot a first-round 44 and is in fifth place in the 11-under age group.
Nick Lyerly shot 1-under 71 and is tied for second place in the 14-15 age group.
Logan Shuping shot even par 72 and is in fourth place in the 16-18 age group.
The final round is today.
• In the first round of the American Junior Golf Association Championship at The Club at Irish Creek on Tuesday , Triston Fisher and Stephen Franken shared the first-round lead with 67s.
Davis Richards shot 71 and is tied for 15th. Walker Cress shot 75.
• Fifty-eight GARS members played in foursomes at Crescent on Monday.
Low ‘A’ Flight player with a net of 63.65 was Gerald Barker. Low ‘B’ Flight player with a net of 65.61 was Lou Manning. Low ‘C’ Flight player with a net of 63.40 was Larry Luther. Low ‘D’ Flight player with a net of 59.19 was Ralph Luther.
• The Corbin Hills Women’s Golf Association played a Throw-Out Tournament on Tuesday.
In the First Flight, Mary Seaford won first place in the gross position, while Becky Isenhour placed first in the net category. The gross winner in the Second Flight was Susan Wydner. Tammie Drew placed first in the net play.
Toni Iossi won low putts for the day.
Lexington High will hold its second annual Hall of Fame induction ceremony on Sept. 15. Inductees are from Lexington and Dunbar high schools.
This year’s class includes Toe Joe Burns, Josh Harris, Roy Holt Sr., Deems May, Joe McIntosh, Carlos Terry and Buddy Walser.
•Athletic passes are now available for Lexington High School.
East Rowan rising senior pitcher Joseph Peeler has committed to UNC Wilmington’s baseball program.
Peeler had a successful summer pitching for the South Charlotte Panthers showcase team.
Chris Johnston (North Rowan) graduated from UNC with a degree in athletic training in 2011 and earned his masters from Toledo in 2013.
Johnston trained as a resident at the Ben Hogan Sports Clinic in Fort Worth, Texas, where he got to work with TCU and TCU athletes.
Johnston was hired in June as West Virginia’s athletic trainer for baseball and volleyball.
The Kannapolis Intimidators scored three runs on wild pitches and beat the Lexington Legends 5-1 on Tuesday at CMC-NorthEast Stadium.
Kannapolis (55-64, 26-26 second half) got a run-scoring single from new second baseman Eddy Alvarez .
Alvarez competed in four speed-skating events in the Winter Olympics in Sochi, taking a silver medal in the 5,000-meter relay.
Jonathan Rucker made two interceptions for Carson in a football scrimmage on Tuesday.
A.L. Brown’s Kaylee Cook was selected to compete in the Queen of Diamonds Showcase South at Winthrop on Aug. 30-31.
Cook is a left-handed pitcher, first baseman and outfielder. She plays travel ball with Salisbury’s Extreme Performance.
The QDSS, now in its 8th season, is part of the Queen of Diamonds Showcase events which are the largest fastpitch softball showcases in the U.S.This event attracts athletes from 21 states and Canada. Cook was one of about 260 athletes selected out of over 1.500 applicants.
Athletes apply and are selected based on ability, potential, academics, graduation year, coaches requests and referrals.
China Grove Middle School will begin football practice on Monday, Aug. 18, from 6-8 p.m.
Practice will be 6-8 pm the remainder of the week except for Friday which will be 3:30-5:30 p.m.
Players will need to bring a copy of their physical and wear a T-shirt, shorts, and cleats.
Helmets will be handed out at 5 p.m. for those who do not have one.

Southeast Middle School football will have its first practice for 7th and 8th graders on Friday Aug. 15, from 6-8 p.m. Players should bring a current physical, cleats, shorts and T-shirt and report to the locker room. For further information, contact head coach Stephen London at 704-224-5259.
