EAST SPENCER — A big crowd in East Spencer had no sun but lots of fun Saturday at Southern City Tabernacle AME Zion Church’s first summer community day.
“I was absolutely pleased, especially considering the weather,” Pastor Patrick Tate said. “The goal was to reach out to the community, and it was wonderful to see all the younger folks here.”
Despite overcast skies and occasional sprinkles, about 175 people came to the event, which was organized by Deanna Corpening and other church members. Fliers for the event simply read, “For all you do, this day is for you” and “Come and let us show you how much we appreciate you.”
The church provided a free hotdog and hamburger lunch, and every child received a treat bag filled with candy. Some boys were too busy playing football in the yard to stop for sweets, but one little guy took his bag and quietly devoured each piece while sitting under the stairs, out of the fray.
Hula hooping was popular, with a few more experienced hoopers giving tips to youngsters struggling to keep the plastic rings circling their hips, necks or arms.
With the 1979 disco hit “Ain’t No Stopping Us Now” blaring from the speakers, adults including East Spencer Mayor Barbara Mallett took to the driveway-turned-dance floor outside while members of the Phoenix step team stomped and clapped through their routine in the church basement.
“It was a good event, a way to bring the community together,” said church member Peanut Hawkins, who handed out candy and took a turn in the hula hoop. “It was bad weather, but we made the best of it.”
Organizers plan to make the community day an annual event and hope to offer backpacks filled with school supplies next year, Tate said.
