Goodsons to raise money for Lung Cancer Initiative

SALISBURY — The 2014 Barron D. Goodson Memorial Fundraiser will look a bit different this year, but the mission remains the same — raising money for the Lung Cancer Initiative of North Carolina.
The past two years have relied on the Goodson Classic Car and Truck show to raise more than $30,000.
This year, in memory of what would have been Barron Goodson’s 65th birthday Aug. 13 (next Wednesday), his “girls” — wife Sharon and daughters Summer and Sunni — are leading efforts to raise $6,500 during the months of August and September for the LCINC.
There are three ways to help: through donations that make you eligible for raffle prizes, at a “Dining for Dollars Night” next Wednesday at Longhorn Steakhouse in Concord, or through Aug. 28 game vouchers to the Kannapolis Intimidators.
A longtime purchasing agent and domestic purchasing director for Cannon Mills and its successors, Fieldcrest-Cannon and Pilowtex, Barron Goodson died of lung cancer Jan. 5, 2012.
He was a major car enthusiast, and the Goodson women started the Barron D. Goodson Memorial Classic Car and Truck Show later that same year.
The Goodsons plan to bring back the show in 2015.
Since 2008, the LCINC has funded more than $600,000 in lung cancer research and jump-started the careers of researchers who have gone on to receive additional funding from the National Institute of Health and the American Cancer Society.
“Barron’s Girls” are pitching in the first $650 toward this year’s fund-raising efforts. Donations make the contributors eligible for a raffle prize drawing, to be held at the end of September.
Here’s a list of the raffle prizes:
• A football signed by University of North Carolina Football Head Coach Larry Fedora.
• Two tickets to the UNC vs. Georgia Tech football game in Chapel Hill, Oct. 18.
• A large assortment of classic car-cleaning and servicing supplies.
• A private airplane ride with pilot Jerry Goodson.
• One of six classic car and diner scenes by local artist Betty Sedberry.
• One of 10 gift certificates, each valued at $10, for dining at Gary’s BBQ in China Grove.
To donate, you can visit the Goodsons’ website at goodsonclassic.com for details and links.
Donations also will be taken at The Goodson Classic table at the Kannapolis Cruise-in at Cannon Village Saturday; at Darrell’s BBQ in Rockwell, Aug. 15, from 5-7 p.m.; or at Gary’s BBQ in China Grove, Aug. 22, from 5-7 p.m.
The Kannapolis Intimidators game vouchers also will be available at those places.
To make a contribution by mail, send a check (made out to The Goodson Classic) to The Goodson Classic, 424 D. Earnhardt Road, Rockwell, NC 28138. Also indicate your raffle item preferences.
As for the Dining for Dollars Night, you can obtain a voucher in advance and see the Goodsons at the Longhorn Steakhouse on Copperfield Boulevard, Northeast, Concord, on Barron Goodson’s 65th birthday, Aug. 13.
Between 4 and 8 p.m., 10 percent of your dinner bill will be donated to the LCINC.
There also will be a mini cruise-in of classic cars at the adjacent Bank of North Carolina starting at 5 p.m.
Dining for Dollars vouchers must be obtained in advance at the Goodson Classic table at Saturday’s Kannapolis Cruise-In, or printing a voucher off an online link. Go to goodsonclassic.com for the link and other details.
On Aug. 28 the Intimidators will be playing the Rome Braves on the ACN Charity Spotlight Night at CMC-NorthEast Stadium.
Tickets are normally $10, but by obtaining a voucher in advance, you can redeem it at will-call on game day for only $5. When you redeem your voucher, 50 percent of the proceeds will be donated to the LCINC.
The Goodson Classic will be throwing out a first pitch, and a table will be set up where you can get lung cancer information and awareness items.
Besides the aforementioned locations, you also can obtain a baseball game voucher by sending a self-addressed, stamped envelope to: The Goodson Classic, 424 D. Earnhardt Road, Rockwell, NC 28138.
Be sure to leave enough time for your voucher(s) to be returned and specify how many you would like to receive.
