Sloop triumphs at ASU camp

Many Rowan County wrestlers participated in Appalachian’s wrestling camp.
East’s Sam Cornacchione, Levi Peterson, Logan Haas, Max Wall, Daniel Muncy, Grant Hoffner, Carson’s Devon Youker, Brady Argabright, Cameron Barringer, Bronson Knabbe, Jaron McMasters, Brandon Sloop, South’s Logan Durham and Jacob Hall, West’s Miller Graham, Alex Williams and Jacob Wood and Southeast’s Timmy Boyd competed.
Coaches were East’s Barry Justus and West’s John Brown.
The team went 7-1 in Division II with Cornacchione, Durham, Argabright, Knabbe, Wall, Muncy, McMasters and Sloop going undefeated in team matches.
In the individual tournament, Sloop placed first at 182.
Durham (120), Argrabright (152) and Wall (170) placed fourth.
The Kannapolis Intimidators (53-58, 24-21 second half) failed to hold a late 3-0 lead and lost 6-3 to visiting Hickory in 11 innings on Tuesday.
The Southeast Regional tournament starts Thursday in Asheboro.
A tournament pass is $40.
North Carolina champ Shelby plays Georgia at 4:30 Thursday. Host Randolph County plays the undefeated Virginia champs at 7:30.
In the Dogwood State Junior Championship in Lexington, Concord’s Walker Cress shot 4-under 67 and is the co-leader after the first round.
South Rowan’s Davis Richards shot even-par 71 and is tied for 10th. East Rowan’s Logan Shuping and Nick Lyerly shot 74s.
In the girls division, China Grove’s Carley Cox shot 86.
• The Corbin Hills women participated in a match play event on Tuesday.
The winning team was the Blue Team consisting of Susan Morris, Beth Calhoun, Phyllis Durland, Azalee Story, Bev Cobb, Ruth Bowles, Faye Cline, Eileen Full, Sharon Skinner, Louise Collins, Joy Maughmer and Betsey Edgeworth.
• The Rowan Junior Open will be played Aug. 18 and 19.
The format is stroke play. The first round will be at Irish Creek and the final round will be Warrior.
The defending champion is Davis Richards.
Sixty-five players have registered and 96 will be accepted. Entries are open until Aug. 16.
Southeast Middle softball tryouts begin Aug. 18 from 3-5. To try out you must have a current physical and you need to bring your own water bottle.
Former West Rowan, Virginia and Appalachian State standout Donte Minter’s basketball camp has been rescheduled for Aug. 11-14 at Hall Gym. Camp is for grades 2-11 and is from 9 until 1 daily. Camp price is $65.

Softball: 5/6/7/8 group and 9/10/11/12 group.
