Art Pope has resigned as state budget director. Gov. Pat McCrory will replace him with Lee Roberts, a member of the North Carolina Banking Commission.
Pope had told McCrory he would work for just one year and McCrory agreed to Pope’s proposal of working for $1 for the year. The governor asked Pope to stay on through the short session and the final budget process.
Pope says his last day will be Sept. 5. Lee Roberts is the son of journalist Cokie Roberts.
