Newsome gets East-West nod

A.L. Brown’s Mike Newsome was announced Thursay as the head football coach for the West squad in the 2015 East-West All-Star Game.
Newsome’s staff will include Josh Brooks (Franklin), Steven Davis (Dudley), Kevin Gillespie (Page), Joey Robinson (Mountain Heritage) and Robert “Spider” Thompson (Statesville).
West Johnston’s Jimmy Williams was named as head coach of the East squad.
Newsome is entering his fourth season at A.L. Brown after great success at Matthews Butler. Newsome’s Wonder teams hav been 12-2, 10-4 and 7-5. A.L. Brown moved up to 4A for the 2013 season.
Alex Freeman, 13, made his first hole-in-one at McCanless on Wednesday.
Freeman aced the 145-yard No.3 hole with a 5-iron. Witnessing the shot was Kap Yang.
• Logan Shuping shot 76 Thursday in the final round of the Carolinas Junior Boys Championship held at Camden Country Club and tied for 21st. Davis Richards shot a 72 Thursday and finished tied for 27th.
• In the eGolf Tour’s Spring Creek Classic in Gordonsville, Va., Frank Adams III has shot 66-72 — 148 and is tied for eighth at 6-under. Will Collins has shot 73-70 — 143 and made the cut at 1-under.
• Three Catawba golfers played in the Carolinas Golf Association North Carolina Amateur Match Play event at River Landing in Wallace.
Zach Griffis qualified for match play by shooting 2-under 75-67 — 142. The cutline was at 143. Ryan Szalay shot 76-73 — 149 and Brian Donaldson shot 78-78 — 156.
Elon’s Troy Beaver shot 76-74 — 150.
• Seventy-one members played the first round of the annual GARS tournament at Lexington Country Club.
Low ‘A’ Flight player wa Lou Manning with a net of 63.21. Low “B’ Flight player with a net of 64.91 was Bill Hathcock. Harry Agner was Low ‘C’ Flight player with a net of 66.49. Low ‘D’ Flight player with a net of 69.37 was Richard Loman.
The Kannapolis Intimidators rallied to beat Augusta 4-3 on a rainy Thursday at CMC-NorthEast Stadium.
Ryan Leonards had the key hit as Kannapolis (51-56) scored three runs in the eighth. First pitch tonight is at 7:05 p.m.
Matt Mauldin (North Rowan, Wake Tech) batted .300 (9-for-30) for the Rowan Patriots in the All American Collegiate Baseball League. Connor Bridges (Carson, App. State) batted .375 (9-for-24) for the Patriots.
Competition continued in the nationals in Iowa for the Hurley YMCA Warriors on Thursday.

The Salisbury Saints 6th-grade boys basketball travel team will hold tryouts on Aug. 18, at 6 p.m. and Aug. 21, at 6 p.m. (if needed). Tryouts are open to anyone interested in playing for the Saints. Try out at First Baptist Church Gymnasium at 220 N. Fulton St., Salisbury. To be eligible, a player must be in 6th grade as of Oct. 1, 2014 and cannot turn 14 prior to Sept. 1, 2015. If a player is in the 7th grade as of Oct. 1, 2014 and wants to play down, he cannot turn 13 prior to Sept. 1, 2015.
