Joyce Allen, author of the young adult novel “The Threads of Earth” will be at Literary Bookpost & Just the Thing on Friday, July 18, 5:30-7:30 p.m.
The book is the second in the Threads trilogy. The first book was “Those Who Hold the Threads.” The series is about a 14-year-old who learns she is destined for something different, something ancient in her modern world.
In the second book, according to Allen’s website, the character Jane “plans to spend the summer learning as much as she can about her life role. But she doesn’t guess that new trouble is about to find her in the form of a vengeful Titan goddess, a god who crosses impossible boundaries and can’t be trusted, and a threat from the past that could put all Earth at risk and perhaps even more than Earth. Her sisters of the Four give what help they can; so do her hacker friend Jinx and Granny Clo’s new boyfriend: the metalworker-god Hephaestus. But their support can go only so far. Because of a bond she did not ask for and does not want, this is a fight Jane must fight alone.”

As part of the “Literary Elements” Summer Reading Program for Adults, Rowan Public Library will present “Approaching Star Trek,” led by Jack T. Howard, a physics and astronomy instructor at Rowan-Cabarrus Community College. His first work in astronomy was variable star research at Kitt Peak National Observatory, and he holds a master’s degree in astronomy from James Cook University. He has given a number of talks to schools and others about anything from everyday science and the exploration of the universe to the Star of Bethlehem.
