Town turns out for procession, watermelon, more
COOLEEMEE — Even after 18 years, decorated lawn mowers, bicycles, golf carts, trailers and dogs lined up for the town’s annual July Fourth parade.
Winding down Marginal Street from the school, a few blocks to Erwin Street, up Cross and Church to the historic Zachary House grounds, crowds cheered as candy was tossed to children along the way.
Sponsored each year by the town of Cooleemee, free watermelon and snow cones were a welcome delight after participants finished their route Friday.
The Cooleemee Civitan Club sold hot dogs and quickly ran out.
The “Happy Birthday America” float won first prize in the “Best Float” contest, crafted by volunteers working to create a new Cooleemee Splash & Swim Center.
