Sign up today for Thursday stir-fry workshop

Published 12:00 am Tuesday, June 24, 2014

Stir fry is a Chinese cooking style dating back more than 1,500 years that involves the quick, high-heat cooking of meat and/or vegetables in oil using a smooth metal pan or bowl (traditionally, a wok). In recent years, the popularity of stir fry has spread across the globe due to its quickness, ease and delicious results.
When stir-frying, you are simply tossing and turning bite-sized pieces of food in a little hot oil in a wok over high heat, and in five minutes or less, the work is done. Vegetables emerge crisp and bright. Meats are flavorful, tender and well seared. Although a great deal of prep is required in the beginning, once everything is prepped and tossed into the wok, your job is done. Your end product will be a delicious and healthy dish full of fiber-rich vegetables and lean proteins that combine to make a delicious dinner with minimal cleanup.
So if you are interested in learning more about stir-frying, join Toi Degree on Thursday at noon for stir-frying. During the workshop, you will learn the basics of stir-frying, how to prepare food for the wok, suitable oils for stir-frying, wok selection, and of course, a few samples. When you leave, you will be ready to toss your favorite vegetables and lean protein in your skillet or wok to create a new masterpiece.
There are still a few seats left. Registration is required, and the sessions are free and open to the public. Participants will receive a sampling of food, recipes and other educational materials. The classes will be held at the Rowan County Agriculture Center, located at 2727 Old Concord Road, Salisbury. Funding for the series is made possible through the Blanche & Julian Robertson Family Foundation Inc.
To reserve your seat, give us a call at 704-216-8970 by the end of the day today. For more information, feel free to contact Toi N. Degree, Family & Consumer Education agent at the Rowan County Cooperative Extension office, 704-216-8970.
