Lyerly, Richards advance in match play

East Rowan’s Nick Lyerly and South Rowan’s Davis Richards have advanced to the Round of 16 in the 47th Junior Boys Championship being held in Roaring Gap.

Both will compete today.

Lyerly takes on Huntersville’s Blake Fiest, while Richards is matched up with Asheville’s Chris Akers.

In the Round of 32, Lyerly, a rising sophomore, won 4 and 3 against Salisbury’s Michael Childress, a rising freshman. Richards, a rising senior, beat Gastonia’s Avery Price 6 and 5

In the Round of 54, also played on Wednesday, Lyerly won in 19 holes against Nebo’s Jordan Clontz, Childress beat Asheboros Justin Emmons 4 and 3, and Richards defeated Belmont’s Zach Brewer 1-up.

East Rowan’s Logan Shuping, a rising junior, lost 2 and 1 to Asheville’s Will Tamplin in the Round of 64.

• In the eGolf Tour’s Mimosa Hills Open, Will Collins and Johnny Kyger shot first-round 69s.

Frank Adams III shot 71.

Avery Rogers (East Rowan, Guilford) is pitching for the Kernersville Bulldogs.

He has thrown 10 innings so far.

Rogers (1-0) has struck out 15, while allowing three runs and eight hits. He’s walked five and has a 2.70 ERA.

Rogers’ latest outing was Tuesday when he pitched against the Burlington Royals, a pro rookie-league team. He struck out three in 1 1/3 innings. He struck out the side in the seventh inning.

Ashton Fleming ( East, Surry CC) is also playing for the Bulldogs. Fleming turned a double play to help Rogers in the Burlington game.

The Bulldogs won 15-2.

Dale Ijames is the general manager of the Bulldogs, and his son, Dustin, is the coach.

Junior Legion

South Rowan won 4-2 against Stanly County. Dillon Norton was the winning pitcher and struck out seven.

• Rowan County Junior Legion won against Carson.

West football seats

The West Rowan High School Athletic Boosters are now taking renewals for previously held reserved football seats for this comingvarsity football season.
