Garcia, Bautista shine

West Rowan third baseman Juan Garcia and pitcher Omar Bautista are playing for the South Charlotte Panthers 2015 showcase team.
Garcia is 8-for-32 so far with five RBIs. Bautista is 2-1 with 12 strikeouts in 13 innings and a 2.14 ERA.
• East Rowan’s Ike Freeman plays for the Panthers 2016 team.
Four members of that team have committed to UNC. Freeman will join Charlotte Catholic pitcher Nick Bruno, Lumberton pitcher Evan Odum and Eastern Guilford first baseman/catcher Luke Robinson.
Freeman is batting .286 with a homer and five RBIs.

Major leagues
Jerry Sands (Catawba) had a game-winning hit — a two-run, pinch-hit homer in the eighth — to lead Tampa Bay to a 5-4 win over Baltimore on Monday. See Page 4.
Catawba’s Paul Kronenfeld has signed with the Cincinatti Reds. The senior was a 25th-round draft pick.
• The Kannapolis Intimidators lost 7-1 to Greensboro on Sunday to finish the first half of the SAL season.
• L.A. Dodgers prospect Corey Seager was ranked as baseball’s No. 11 prospect by ESPN’s Keith Law recently.
Seager (NW Cabarrus, Kannapolis Legion) is batting .344 with 12 homers, 24 doubles and 49 RBIs after 60 games in advanced Class A.
• K.C. Royals prospect Whit Merrifield (Davie) had three hits Sunday and is batting .375 since being promoted to Triple-A Omaha.
• Nick Lomascolo (Catawba) pitched a scoreless inning in relief for the State College Spikes on Sunday.
Rookie driver Justin Allison earned his career best finish of third in his ARCA debut in Michigan.
The third-place finish followed a seventh at Toledo and a fifth at Pocono. Team BCR plan to compete at Chicagoland Speedway on July 19.
Emory Atwater aced the 112-yard No. 6 hole at Warrior on Monday.
Atwater made his second career ace with a 9-iron. He was playing with Frank Monaco, Bill Vander Haar and Mike Mckinley.

• The second Crescent member-guest tournament was held on Saturday. The format was Best Ball of partners Gross and Net Division.

First net: Jason Virden-Jeff Faggart shot 60.
Salisbury’s Clint Comadoll was named Central Carolina Conference Male Athlete of the Year for the 2013-14 school year.
Comadoll made All-CCC teams twice in three different sports: football, soccer, and tennis.
A member of the National Honor Society, he was part of the state championship football team in 2010 and the 2A state champs in soccer in 2011 and 2013.
• West Davidson soccer player and distance runner Callie Wynn was named Central Carolina Conference Female Athlete of the Year.
Wynn will compete at Duke in track and cross country.

West Rowan Junior Legion won 3-1 against South Rowan on Monday.
Brett Graham had two hits. Lee Poteat had a double. Both drove in runs to back a complete game by Bryan Ketchie. Ketchie struck out four.
• Rowan Junior Legion won 9-8 against Lake Norman on Sunday.
• On Monday, the Kannapolis 0’s rolled to a 10-0 win against Mooresville Post 537.
Kaziem Black had two hits. Mark Perkins had two RBIs. Alex Rodriguez pitched five innings and struck out four.
Wells Fargo Cup state champions were Bishop McGuinness in 1A, Carrboro in 2A, Marvin Ridge in 3A, and Green Hope in 4A.
