If you can write a letter to the editor saying how horrible the president is, and the newspaper publishes it both in print and online for all the world to see, and you don’t get arrested, nobody burns down your house or threatens you, nor does the government shut down the newspaper, nor do thugs trash the newspaper office; well then the president is either not at all like Hitler or Stalin, or he totally flunked Dictator 101. You couldn’t get away with something like that in North Korea, or Russia, or Syria, or Egypt, or Saudi Arabia, or dozens of other countries.
