UPDATE: THE National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for Rowan County effective this afternoon and evening from 4:35-11 p.m.
Primary threats include isolated damaging wind gusts to 70 mph and isolated large hail with hail as much at 1 1/2 inches in diameter.
Remember, a severe thunderstorm watch means conditions are favorable for severe thunderstorms in and close to the watch area. Be on the lookout for worsening weather conditions and updated weather statements, including possible warnings. Severe thunderstorms can occasionally produce tornadoes.

After a misty, foggy start to the day, with 100 percent humidity, we’ll eventually see partly sunny skies with a high near 87. Today and Tuesday will be code yellow or moderate air quality days, with ozone and pollution being the culprits. People with breathing problems may be sensitive to the conditions.
If you followed last week’s forecast, this week is a rerun, with a chance of showers and storms every day and night through next Sunday. Temperatures will remain in the upper 80s and humidity will be high. Looks like we’ve hit the summer doldrums before summer even arrives.

The National Weather Service predicts another 40 percent chance of showers and storm throughout the day Thursday, although it will be partly sunny and near 84. Same thing Thursday night, but a low around 66.
Friday’s going to have a 30 percent chance of raindrops falling on our heads, with a high near 86 under partly sunny skies. The low will be 66, with more chance of raindrops falling.
Saturday’s going to sound awfully familiar: A 30 percent chance of storms and showers, mostly sunny, near 87; nighttime low around 66, etc.
You want to take a guess about Sunday? How about mostly sunny, 87, 30 percent chance of rain.
Any of this storms may produce small hail, cloud-to-ground lightning and gusty winds.
