More difficult than a computer hand

Several of our players who went to the Greensboro Tournament last weekend came away with match points. Congratulations go to Ron and Shirley Jeffers, Dan Fowler and Bill Wisdom.
Our Friday May 31 Evergreen game was very challenging. Every time I hear that the “hard hands must be computer hands” I smile to myself. Our hands are shuffled and dealt by me, by hand every week. Friday’s hands were especially challenging with few game going hands. The seven runners-up pairs were all within 9 points of each other. One mismanaged board can really affect your score greatly. Also one miss scored hand will change outcome of the winning pairs. Care must be taken to vulnerability when scoring; e.g. both down 2 in a minor and down 1 in a major are the same score. The computer can’t know the difference so can’t fix the score automatically as it does in other cases. That was the mistake Friday. First place still went to Marie Pugh and Ruth Bowles, but second-third was shared by the Dick Brisbin/Pat Featherston pair and Harold and Carol Winecoff, and fourth was awarded to Loyd Hill and Wayne Pegram.

We had a great turn-out for our hot dog lunch party Tuesday, June 3 at the Women’s Club. Four pairs, not regulars at the Tuesday game, joined us including Shirley Goodman and Ann Palmer who had never played duplicate bridge before. We hope you can make a habit of coming every Tuesday. Winners were: First, Dick Brisbin and Pat Featherston; second, Gloria Bryant and Wayne Pegram; third, Harold and Carol Winecoff; with Marie Pugh and Loyd Hill in fourth place.
