On June 1, Graduation Sunday, St. John’s Benevolent Foundation awarded $22,907 in scholarships. Receiving scholarships were:
Hugh B. Lyerly Scholarship: Georgia Kirchin.
Margaret Cline and Ernest Crawford Safrit Sr. Scholarship: Rebecca Waggoner, Hannah Addair.
Carl Edgar and Edna Cauble Leazer Church Music Scholarship: Hannah Addair.
Thomas E. Gilbert and Viola H. Bailey Scholarship: Sarah Bolick, Rebecca Agner.
Dorothy Click Fesperman Scholarship: Rebecca Agner, Carter Woolly, Christopher Derrick, Lauren Martz, Paul McNeely, Wesley McNeely, Russell Michalec, Christian Terry, Steven Page, Anna Page.
Bruce Alden Ketner Jr. Scholarship: Lauren Martz, Nathaniel Greene.
Emily May Brown Memorial Scholarship: Christian Terry.
Scott Rierson Scholarship: Rebecca Agner.
Scholarship committee chairman Henry Kluttz presented the awards.
High school and college graduates were recognized June 8 at Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church. Six high school graduates were awarded Grace Lutheran Scholarships valued at $1,000 each. Students must be a member of Grace Lutheran Church, a first-year college student, participate in the worship, fellowship and programs of the congregation and have tuition expense.
This scholarship grows through member donations and fundraisers.
The applicants’ servant profile included: worship service assistant, hand bell choir, instrumental accompanist, youth choir, participation in youth group (LYNC), youth retreat planning, participants on mission trips and the 2012 National Youth Convention; and organizing and conducting fundraisers. Many young people serve on church committees. They visited shut-ins, helped in the nursery, served homeless shelter residents, assisted in vacation Bible school, and volunteered at church workdays and fundraising events.
Recipients:
Jesse C. Carson High School — Dillon Atwell, son of Brian and Starr Atwell, will begin his studies toward a degree in civil engineering at Pitt Community College. Dillon was the 2012 and 2013 Rowan County Pitcher of the Year.
Nicholas Barlowe, son of Kelli Barlowe and Deckster Barlowe, will attend N.C. State University with a focus in human biology preparing for medical school.
Hannah Elmore, daughter of Gary and Greta Elmore, will attend Brevard College and study mathematics.
Paige Hartsell, daughter of Dennis and Lori Hartsell, will attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to begin her studies toward her educational goal in the field of pharmacy.
Lyndsey Moore, daughter of Shannon Moore and David Moore, will attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to begin her educational goal of a master’s degree in chemistry.
West Rowan High School — Sam Reeder, son of Michael and Sara Reeder, will attend Catawba College. His educational goals include a major in politics and a minor in music.
