RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina’s original copy of the 13th amendment that abolished slavery is going on tour as part of a celebration of Juneteenth, or June 19, the date that many blacks observe as when the last slaves learned they were free.
State archivists believe the tour of seven historic sites marks the first time the fragile document has left Raleigh.
The copy will be displayed Thursday at Historic Edenton and Friday at Somerset Place in Creswell. It will then be displayed June 12 at Vance Birthplace in Weaverville; June 13 at Charlotte Hawkins Brown Museum in Sedalia; and June 14 at Historic Stagville in Durham. It then goes June 21 at the CSS Neuse Interpretative Center in Kinston and June 28 at Tryon Place in Kinston.
