O’Brien gets shot in Canada

Quarterback Danny O’Brien (Catawba) is now in training camp with the Ottawa RedBlacks of the Canadian Football League.
O’Brien played at Maryland and Wisconsin before playing his last year of eligiility at Catawba.
O’Brien, 23, had a rookie tryout with the Atlanta Falcons, after not hearing his name called in the recent NFL draft.
O’Brien then signed with the Columbus Lions of the Professional Indoor Football League, but he’s been in Canada since Sunday.
South Rowan junior Davis Richards played in the U.S. Open sectional qualifier held in Columbus. Ohio, today.
Richards shot 72-78 — 150 to finish 6-over.
There were 120 players competing for 16 spots. The qualifers shot 2-under or better.
Richards, who has committed to N.C. State, led some PGA pros after his first round of the day.
In the Rolling Hills Thursday Scramble, front nine winners were Mitchell Swaringen, Jr. Howard and Gary Fink.
Back nine winners were Alex Safrit, Sonny Wilson and Johnny Carpenter
Closest to pin winners were Ron Eidson, Safrit, Wilson and Henry Morgan.
Trey Michalczewski hit a three-run homer in the first inning to power the Kannapolis Intimidators to a 7-1 win at West Virginia on Monday..
Kannapolis (26-30) has won four out of five.
West Rowan defeated Lexington 4-0 on Sunday nigh.
Sawyer Strickland was winning pitcher and allowed only two hits.
West was led at the plate by Lee Poteat, Brandon Walton and Trevor Atwood with two hits each. Atwood also had a double.
West plays at Lexington tonight at 7 p.m.
The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association announced that Adrian Ferguson will join the staff as associate commissioner of media relations, beginning July 1.
Ferguson comes to the conference office from Fayetteville State University where he served as assistant athletics director for media relations and manager of game operations since 2008.
Prior to joining the staff at FSU, Ferguson spent seven years at Livingstone as the sports information director following three and a half years as assistant director of athletics for Sports Information at Winston-Salem State University.
The North Carolina Catfish Association Tournament Series will be hosting a tournament on the waters of High Rock Lake on June 7.
Catfish anglers will be competing for cash prizes and also can qualify for the 2014 Cabela’s King Kat USA Eastern Championship that will be held on October 3 and 4 on Lake Wateree in Camden, S.C., by finishing in the top 3 in any of our events.
