Sands back in majors

Former Catawba baseball standout Jerry Sands in back in the majors for the first time since August, 2012, when he was with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
The Tampa Bay Rays called up Sands from their Triple A team in Durham after Wil Myers was injured in a collision in the outfield on Saturday night.
Serving as the DH, Sands batted cleanup for Tampa Bay on Sunday afternoon against the Boston Red Sox. Sands had a tough day against Jon Lester and went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts.
Sands played with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2011 and 2012. He batted .244 with four homers and 27 RBIs in 70 games. Sands was traded to the Red Sox following the 2012 season, but he was traded again to the Pittsburg Pirates before ever playing a game with Boston.
He played with the Pirates Triple A club in Indianapolis in 2013 and was claimed by Tampa Bay after the Pirates waived him.
At Durham, Sands was hitting .268 with nine homers in 54 games, including one on Saturday in his final game with the Bulls. He had 12 doubles and 36 RBIs.
Sands, who set records for homers, walks, RBIs and slugging percentage in three seasons at Catawba, had a strong Spring Training with Tampa Bay but didn’t make the final roster.

Southern Rowan is home tonight against Mooresville Post 537.
Jake Sanchez pitched seven strong innings to lead the Kannapolis Intimidators to a 5-1 win against Hagerstown on Sunday in South Atlantic League action. Trey Michalczewski had a two-run double.
Hagerstown used an eight-run fourth inning to win the nightcap 11-5 and split the doubleheader.
Rowan County won 3-0 against Mooresville on Sunday at Newman Park, Nathan Hill held Mooresville to three hits in five innings for the win. Alec Hamilton allowed one hit and earned a save.

• Rowan County beat West Rowan 12-1 on Saturday.
Harrison Smith was the winning pitcher. Hayden Setzer finished on the mound. Smith and Bryant Godsey had two hits each.
Rowan plays tonight at NW Cabarrus against the Kanapolis O’s at 7 and at Carson on Tuesday at 7. Rowan will return home Wednesday against Randleman at 7.
• Stanly beat the Kannapolis Junior O’s 4-1.
Chandler Hubbard had two hits for the O’s.
Jarrod Swaringen pitched a complete game for Stanly.
Brian Bauk (Salisbury, App. State) will be playing for the Brockton Rox in the Futures League.
Blake Houston (South Rowan, Catawba) is playing for the Gastonia Grizzlies of the Coastal Plain League and had two hits on Saturday.
Catawba’s Dylan Richardson is playing for the Asheboro Copperheads of the CPL. Matt Vernon (Davie, NC State) is playing for the High Point-Thomasville team in the CPL.
Several Rowan standouts are involved in showcase baseball this summer.
Carson outfielder Michael Morrison is playing for the Charlotte MegaStars 16U team.
West Rowan standouts Omar Bautista and Juan Garcia are playing for the South Charlotte Panthers 2015 team, and East Rowan shortstop Ike Freeman is playing for the Charlotte Panthers’ 2016 team.
A bases-loaded walk in the top of the 12th inning decided the Division II championship game on Sunday in Cary.
Senior Matt Bowles drew a one-out walk to force home the go-ahead run and the Southern Indiana Screaming Eagles beat Colorado Mesa 3-2 to capture their second national championship.
Southern Indiana also won the national title in 2010.
The McCanless Couples played a Captain’s Choice on Sunday.
The first-place team was Ty Cobb, Bev Cobb, Frank Foster and Ricky Honeycutt.
The second-place team was Tommy Reynolds, Bryan Reynolds and Harry Owens.
Gene Seaford, Mary Seaford, Sharon Miller and Monica Green placed third.
Mary Seaford won closest to the pin, Ty Cobb won longest putt.

East Rowan is offering a new indoor adult softball league.
The league is open to men and women 18 or older.
Registration: Saturday, May 31 – Saturday, June 21
Cost: $200 per team
Games: Monday and Tuesday evenings at the East Rowan YMCA Season: Games begin on Monday, June 30.
