Jonathan Bruno of Mooresville graduated from Emory & Henry College during its May 10 commencement ceremony.
Wofford College senior Kane Carter Sherrill, son of Scott and Judy Sherrill, was recognized on May 6 during Honors Day ceremonies when he received the James Edwin Proctor Award, the department award for finance. Sherrill majored in accounting and finance and received a bachelor of arts degree May 18.
As a four-year participant on Wofford’s football team, Sherrill has been recognized as Academic All-Conference in the Southern Conference for the past two years and on the Southern Conference Athletics Honor Roll for the past three years. He was one of five selected members of Wofford’s CFA Global Investment Research Challenge Team and a member of the student-run James Investment Fund. Sherrill will work in the audit area of KPMG this summer and then will pursue a master’s degree in accounting at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.

Rachel Patricia Jones of Salisbury, whose major is biological sciences, was named to Clemson University’s spring 2014 president’s list.
Clemson University has announced the names of local students who are on the dean’s list for the spring 2014 semester. To be named to the dean’s list, a student achieved a grade-point average between 3.50 and 3.99 on a 4.0 scale.

Jenna Bryan of Salisbury was among students honored recently with inclusion on Carson-Newman University’s dean’s list for the spring 2014 semester.
Students earning a grade-point average of 3.5 or higher while taking 12 or more credit hours are awarded the distinction of dean’s list honors.
Zach Ford, a history major from Landis, was named to the spring 2014 dean’s list at Southern Wesleyan University, earning a GPA of 3.5 or higher on all work attempted during the spring 2014 semester, with no grade for any single course below 3.0.
Simon Connelly of North Rowan and Elizabeth Martin of East Rowan received the Daughters of the American Revolution National Defense Committee ROTC Medal.
The medal is awarded to a graduating ROTC student who has demonstrated academic excellence, dependability, good character, adherence to military discipline, leadership and a fundamental and patriotic understanding of the importance of the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps.

Surry Community College named Michael Ashton Fleming of Salisbury to the spring 2014 semester president’s list.
The president’s list recognizes full-time students who achieve academic excellence and maintain a 3.75 grade point average with no final grade lower than a “C.” Students on the president’s list also qualify for the dean’s list.
Kiersten Lockman of Kannapolis is one of 40 students who participated in the Honors Scholars program at William Woods University during the 2013-14 academic year.
The Honors Scholars program is a selective program that fosters the growth of students who are dedicated, imaginative and excited about learning. The program is a supportive community composed of students from all majors on campus. Approximately 20 students are accepted into the program each year.
To be eligible for the program, incoming freshmen must have a high ACT score and a high cumulative GPA, provide an essay demonstrating their writing ability and complete an interview with the scholarship committee. Students must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.4 or higher to remain in the program.
Simone Dixon, daughter of Mr. and Ms. Glenn Dixon, and Emily Gale, daughter of Joan Gale and Donald Gale, were named to the Furman University dean’s list for the 2014 spring semester. Furman’s dean’s list is composed of full-time undergraduate students who earn a grade-point average of 3.4 or higher on a 4.0 system.
Three hundred and seventy-two seniors were awarded Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Arts degrees on May 17, during ceremonies marking Juniata College’s 136th Commencement. Among the graduates is Haldis Elizabeth Joan Andersen of Mooresville, daughter of Hope C. Andersen and Thomas C. Andersen.
She received a bachelor of science degree in geology with a secondary emphasis in biology. While at Juniata, she studied abroad in Dunedin, New Zealand, was inducted into Omicron Delta Kappa and was president of Habitat for Humanity. Andersen is a 2010 graduate of Mooresville Senior High School.
Lake Norman Delta Waterfowl, the local chapter of the 103-year-old national Delta Waterfowl Foundation and the second largest chapter on the East Coast, announced the recipients of its 2014 Canvasback Academic Scholarships.
This year, two seniors graduating from West Rowan High School were each awarded a $500 scholarship to be applied toward their college education. The presentation was made May 23 at the West Rowan High School Senior Awards ceremony.
William Lytle and Kaelyn Cranford are this year’s awardees. Both Lytle and Cranford are strong students, with a plethora of extracurricular activities and an abiding interest in the outdoors.

The National Merit Scholarship Corp. announced approximately 2,500 winners of National Merit Scholarships financed by U.S. colleges and universities. Officials of each sponsor college selected their scholarship winners from among the finalists in the 2014 National Merit Scholarship Program who plan to attend their institution.
These awards provide between $500 and $2,000 annually for up to four years of undergraduate study at the institution financing the scholarship.
This year, 190 higher education institutions are underwriting Merit Scholarship awards through the National Merit Scholarship Program. Sponsor colleges and universities include 113 private and 77 public institutions located in 44 states and the District of Columbia.
Nicholas R. Greene of Salisbury received the National Merit University of South Carolina scholarship. The Salisbury High School student plans to pursue a career in business.
Charles M. Hicks III of Kannapolis received the National Merit University of Alabama scholarship. Hicks attends the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics. He plans to study architectural engineering.
Aurora K. Taylor of Moorseville received the National Merit University of Chicago scholarship. Taylor attends Davidson Community School and plans to pursue a career in computer science.
