Coming Sunday: Three years ago, Mabel Jacome and Frank Trujillo left their dance studio and hectic life in Miami to raise their family in Rowan County.
Now, the chef (Jacome) and baker (Trujillo) have opened Cubakfe Cuban Cafe and Bakery at 312 N. Salisbury GQ Ave. in Granite Quarry, offering a taste of Havana to local diners seeking new flavors and Cubans and Miamians looking for a reminder of home.
The restaurant was such a hit in its first week, Trujillo quit his job at Lowe’s to join his wife full-time at the cafe, which continues to pay the bills and will host a grand opening next week.
Brian and Karren Campbell of Faith have taken Jacome and Trujillo and their three children under their wing.
