Twelve years, 25 volunteers and $142,000 later, Helen Brown has managed to inspire and benefit many through her hard work and dedication to host her biannual yard sale to benefit cystic fibrosis research.
Brown first began her yard sales when her grandchildren were diagnosed with cystic fibrosis, an inherited chronic disease that affects the lungs and digestive system.
The sale has grown, and has become an anticipated event for some. The two-day sale will be Friday from noon to 5 p.m. and Saturday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 1621 Emerald St.
Brown said she loves this town and all the help and support she has been given by the community and volunteers. She is especially thankful for the 25 volunteers who help her with the yard sale. This particular year’s yard sale is not only to benefit cystic fibrosis research, but in memory of Camellia Merrill, a yard sale volunteer.
Brown will have many items at the yard sale including roll-top desks (adult and child), antique furniture, vintage glassware, nursery items, recliner and electronics. According to Brown, this will be largest sale yet, thanks to all the donations made by the community.
In appreciation for all the support Brown has received, she will raffle off a print by Lexington artist Bob Timberlake. The drawing will be held Saturday at 3 p.m. Registrants do not have to be present to win.
To accommodate the huge sale, Emerald Avenue will be a one-way street for the duration of the event. Emerald Avenue runs between Mahaley Avenue and Catawba Road, one block from Knox Middle School.
