Winston-Salem hospital officials say a Salisbury man is in fair condition today, following a weekend car crash along U.S. 601.
Steve Murph, husband of local restaurant owner Laura Murph, received serious burns, when his Volkswagen Beetle overturned and caught fire, just inside the Davie County line near Lady Bug Lane.
Jerusalem Fire Chief Wayne Williams said when he and his department arrived on the scene, Murph was already out of the vehicle. The collision occurred around 8 p.m.
The N.C. Highway Patrol investigated the crash, but official reports were not available. According to Williams, who spoke with witnesses at the scene, Murph reportedly fell asleep at the wheel and ran off the road. His son, Tom, who was apparently traveling behind him, pulled Murph from the burning car.
The family had been to a Volkswagen car show at the Farmington Dragway in Mocksville. Steve Murph was the only one in the car, Williams said.
Williams said he did not know the extent of Murph’s injuries, but that he was taken to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center. Laura Murph owns L.A. Murph’s Cafe & Meals to Go in Salisbury.
