The Mustangs host Piedmont in the third round of the 3A state playoffs.
Chase Jarrett (5-1) is expected to pitch for East.
East beat defending 3A champ Weddington on Friday with a walk-off squeeze bunt by Dustin Ritchie.
Tonight, East takes on a Piedmont team that won the 2013 2A state title before moving back up to the 3A ranks this season.
Piedmont is part of the strong Southern Carolina Conference, which also includes Weddington and Marvin Ridge.
Piedmont pitcher Corey Sikes (6-3, 0.78 ERA) signed with Western Carolina.
David Nash (5-3, 1.05 ERA) ) also has been outstanding for Piedmont.
East last faced Piedmont and coach Milt Flow in the 2009 playoffs when East ralled for a 5-4 victory with three runs in the bottom of the seventh.
The East-Piemont winner takes on the South Rowan-Carson winner on Friday.

Salisbury will host Forbush in a third-round game in the 2A state playoffs on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
Dillon Simpson hit a two-run homer in the eighth to lift West Rowan Middle to a 5-3 win against Erwin on Monday in the conference tournament.
Luke Waggoner had four hits for the Bulldogs.
West advanced to Wednesday’s tournament championship game at Southeast.
Davidson County rallied to beat Kannapolis 7-4 on Monday.
• Mocksville lost 6-5 at Randolph County on Monday. West Rowan’s Nick Collins had a big offensive night for Mocksville.
Carson’s Bobby Bauer and Jake Keever placed third in the state high school fishing championships held in Henderson.
The caught five bass, weighing 11 pounds, 11 ounces.
Hickory clubbed three early homers and held off Kannapolis 10-6 on Monday at CMC-NorthEast Stadium.

West Rowan Junior Legion won 15-3 against the Mooresville Legends on Sunday.
Caleb Link had three hits and three RBIs. Brett Graham three hits. Kacey Otto had two hits and four RBIs. Hunter Bernhardt, Link and Graham all doubled.
Bryan Ketchie was the winning pitcher.

Catawba junior Craig Brooks was named Southeast Region Pitcher of the year by all three organizations that name all-region teams — Daktronics, the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association and the America Baseball Coaches Association.
Brooks was 12-3 and struck out 104 batters.
Catawba reliever Ryan McClintock, who had eight saves. was a first team pick on all three teams.
Catawba starting pitcher Shaefer Shepard was second team on the Daktronics and NCBWA teams. Shaefer was 7-3 with a 1.43 ERA.
Catawba’s T.J. Wharton was named as the second team DH by the NCBWA and ABCA. Wharton had 10 homers and 57 RBIs.
Senior Corbin Shive represents the Charlotte 49ers baseball team on the Conference USA All-Academic Team announced by league officials on Monday.
Shive is one of 10 players that make up the 2014 list. Shive has also earned the Conference USA Commissioner’s Academic Medal and was named to the C-USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll last month.
Shive (East Rowan) is a graduate student and owns a 4.0 GPA while working on his Masters in Accounting.
He is a five-time member of Charlotte’s Chancellor’s List and a one-time member of the Dean’s List. Shive already possesses degrees in Accounting and Finance and is now pursuing his Masters.
On the field as a two-way player, Shive appeared in nine games on the mound with six starts posting a 2-3 record with a 3.79 earned run average. Shive would toss a career-high eight innings in a 12-4 win over Wake Forest while fanning a career-high six in early March against UNC Asheville. Offensively,
Shive tied for the team lead with five home runs, including a two-run walk-off in the bottom of the ninth inning against VCU.
Catawba sophomore pitcher Carley Tysinger was named first team All-Southeast Region by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association. As a member of the first team, Tysinger will advance to the All-America ballot.

UNCG junior men’s golfer Roy Dixon (Salisbury) has been selected to the Capital One Academic All-District III At-Large First Team, the College Sports Information Directors of America announced Monday.
Dixon will now advance and be eligible for Academic All-America honors against other first team selections across the eight districts nationwide.
Dixon owns a 3.89 cumulative GPA in finance at UNCG. He has excelled this season on the course, earning First Team All-Southern Conference honors. He is second on the team and third in the league with a 72.65 stroke average. He has posted seven top 20 finishes, including three top 5 showings this spring.
Dixon finished third overall at the 2014 SoCon Championships in Pinehurst and helped the Spartans earn their first-ever bid into the NCAA Tournament with an at-large selection.
He placed 15th overall at the NCAA Regional in Auburn, guiding UNCG to a seventh-place showing, just two shots out the top five position. He also recorded a second place finish at the Middleburg Bank Intercollegiate and a third place finish at the Pinehurst Intercollegiate.
East Rowan’s Nick Lyerly finished second in the Freshman-Sophmore division after losing on the first playoff hole in a TGF UNC Tarheel Junior Championship held at Finley Golf Club.
Lyerly shot 70-72-142. He also tied for second in the overall High School division.
• East’s Logan Shuping shot 73 to finish second in a TYGA one-day tournament held Saturday at Bradford Creek Golf Course in Greenville, N.C.
This finish earned Shuping a spot in the Carolinas Golf Association NC Junior Golf Championship to be held at Roaring Gap Country Club in June.
In the Spring Open Classic at the Country Club of Salisbury, Kevin Lentz-Cole Buckwell shot 131 to win the Championship Flight. Michael Childress-Chris McCoy shot 133 for second.
In the First Flight, Josh Brincefield-Lee Frick won with 139/ John Henderlite-John Kyger shot 143 for second.
In the Second Flight, Jerry Wright-Chris Smith shot 143 for first place. Bruce Stolsworth-Carl Moore shot 144 for second.
In the Third Flight, Wally Eidson-Kyle Venrick shot 150 to win. Mark Habeeb-Adam Habeeb placed second at 158.
• The McCanless Couples played a Captain’s Choice on Sunday.
The team of Ricky Honeycutt, David Huneycutt, Phyllis Myers and Harry Owens won. The team of Calvin Hill, Bryan Reynolds, Jamie Troutman and Frank Foster finished second. The team of Walt Kincaid, Kim Kincaid, Tommy Reynolds and Don Goodnight took third.
Reynolds won longest putt.
The 33rd annual Edgar Welch Memorial Golf Tournament for Rowan County women will be played at 9 a.m. today and May 22 at Corbin Hills and the Country Club of Salisbury.
The tournament is open to all women with an established handicap at a Rowan club and anyone who has played in the tournament before.
The defending champions are Kristi Laton and Phyllis Durland. The tournament is played in memory of Edgar Welch. Welch’s wife, Elaine, established the tournament in his memory. Call Beverly Cobb at 704-279-1477 with any questions.
