Rowan County’s 4-H program has several camps over the summer.
Loom Band Fun: June 1, 10:30 a.m.-noon; $10; ages 9-19; class limit, eight. Learn how to make loom band bracelets. Bring loom and bands if you have them.
Pallet Gardening: June 23, 9 a.m.-noon; $20; ages 7-19; class limit, 10. Have you wanted to grow your own garden? Do you want a garden but do not have the space? Rowan County Cooperative Extension will show you how to make your own pallet garden. Once finished with the program, you will be able to take home your own small garden. Be sure to wear clothing that can get dirty, closed-toe shoes, work gloves and sunscreen.
T-Shirt Recycling: June 25, 10 a.m.-noon; $3; ages 9-19; class limit, 12. Everybody has old T-shirts they would like to keep for memory or use. Each participant will use a T-shirt to make a necklace and then learn what other items they can make. Bring an old T-shirt or two that you would like to recycle. The T-shirt must not have seams running down the sides. It can be old, stained or ripped.
Robotics: June 26, 9:30 a.m.-3:15 p.m.; $20; grades four through seven; class limit, 15. This workshop will introduce participants to the basics of Lego Mindstorm NXT robots. Participants will build a basic robot and learn some basic concepts of programming robots. Lunch and snack will be provided.
Senior Horsemanship June 27, 9 a.m.-3 p.m., $20; ages 14-19; class limit, six. This advanced horsemanship workshop will cover veterinary topics and team penning (horse must be approved by instructor). This class will be held at Rockwater Farm, 250 Troxler Road, Rockwell. You must wear jeans, boots and riding helmet. Bring a bag lunch.
4-H Investigates: July 9-11, 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.; cost, $50; grades five through seven; class limit, five. Who Killed Henry Ward? Participants will become detectives and determine who killed Henry Ward in a hit-and-run car accident almost 100 years ago. Solve this crime by exploring various techniques including blood typing, fingerprint analysis, impression analysis for tires and shoes, hair analysis, blood spatter and DNA evidence. The day camp will be held at East Wilkes Middle School. Transportation, meals and snacks are provided.
Farm to Fork: July 16-18, 10 a.m.-2 p.m.; $25; ages 9-19; class limit, 12. Day camp includes three days of visiting farms, cooking locally sourced produce and meats, and learning how to grow fruits and vegetables. Wear clothing that can get dirty, closed-toe shoes and sunscreen. Bring a bag lunch on Wednesday and Thursday. You might want to bring extra money to buy items from the Farmer’s Market on Wednesday.
Army Strong: July 18, 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m.; $10; ages 9-19; class limit, five. Do you have what it takes to be in the army? Meet real-life soldiers as they guide you through a day of life in the army. They’ll guide students through a physical training routine and challenge them to complete tasks to prepare for military life. Wear athletic shoes and comfortable clothes for physical activity. Bring a bag lunch. Snacks will be provided.
Quilling/Tea Bag Folding: July 22, 9 a.m.-noon; $5; ages 9-19; class limit, eight. Quilling is turning strips of paper into artwork. Students will be able to make cards, party invitations and more. Tea bag folding is turning basic origami folds into different designs. Snack will be provided.
The Mythical World of Herbs: July 23, 9 a.m.-noon; $5; ages, 9-13; class limit, 12. Dating back centuries, herbs have been used in many ways. Tour the Extension Master Gardener Pocket Garden. Learn how to incorporate herbs in soap making and also in a soothing salve. We will also use herbs in a savory cookie recipe.
Lego Creations: July 23, 1-4 p.m.; $3; ages 9-19; class limit, 14. Learn the history of Legos, participate in a free build, and experience team building competitions. Snack will be provided.
Art Explosion: July 24, 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m.; $30; ages 9-18; class limit, five; Like art? Join us for a day of painting and pottery. We will travel to The Preppy Possum and Joseph Sand Pottery to try our hands as an artist for the day. Wear clothing that you won’t mind a dab of paint or clay on. Bring a lunch to eat in the park.
For the Birds – Everyone Needs a Home: July 25, 9 a.m.-noon; $5; ages 9-3, class limit, 10. Take home a custom made birdhouse. Learn about the birds that come to Rowan County. Learn how to make a bird-friendly habitat that will attract these winged wonders to your yard. We will also make and install birdhouses in the Pocket Gardens at the Extension office. Wear closed-toe shoes. Snack will be provided.
Energy Architects: July 29, 8:45 a.m.-4:45 p.m.; cost, $15; grades, rising fifth-seventh; class limit, five. Learn about the effects of energy use through hands-on activities. You will construct a model home to help you understand air flow, heat transfer and energy efficiency. Lunch and snack will be provided.
Introduction to Wildlife Rehabilitation: June 17, 9-11:30 a.m.; $5, ages 9-19; class limit, 12. Learn about wildlife rehabilitation. Youth wildlife projects will be explained. This class will be held at Rockwater Farm, 250 Troxler Road, Rockwell. Wear closed-toe shoes and comfortable clothes. Bring a bag lunch.
Cloverbud Mini-Camp: Dates: June 17-19, 9 a.m.-noon; $15; grades: K-2; class limit, 12. Three days of fun learning about a variety of topics including outdoor adventures, arts and crafts, gardening, and more. Snack will be provided.
Vet for a Day: June 24 , 9-11:30 a.m.; $5; ages 9-13; class limit, 12. Learn about what it takes to become a veterinarian to both small and large animals. This workshop will meet at the Cooperative Extension Office, and then travel to West Innes Animal Hospital in Salisbury with Dr. Mike Miller for small animals and then to Dr. Andy Gardner Large Animal Clinic and visit with Dr. Michelle Gardner and learn about large animal medicine.
Explosion Boxes: July 14, 1-4 p.m.; $5; ages 12-19; class limit, 10. Learn about the three different types of Explosion Boxes. Explosion boxes can be for any occasion, and they fall open when you remove the lid. Bring small photos or objects to use in creating a “mini-scrapbook.”
Juggling Jam & More: July 15, 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m.; $5; ages 8-12; class limit, 8. Learn basic juggling and yo-yo maneuvers. A corn hole game will be played, along with other fun games and activities. Wear comfortable clothing. Bring your yo-yo or juggling balls if you have them. Snack will be provided.
Shooting Sports : July 21, 8 a.m.-1 p.m.; $25; ages 12-19; class limit, 10. Youth will be taught hands-on safety and shooting of firearms. Safety training will be provided by certified 4-H instructors along with hands on techniques of shooting. Youth will be given the opportunity to shoot shotgun, rifle and archery. Bring a bag lunch. Snack will be provided.

No registrations will be taken over the telephone. Registration deadline is Friday, May 30. The Extension Office will be closed for Memorial Day, Monday, May 26.
Note: Participants must have completed kindergarten. Grade listed is the grade the youth just completed.
Activities are open to all youth. You do not have to be a 4-H member.
Checks/money orders should be made payable to Rowan County CES. No registrations accepted without payment. All fees non-refundable unless the class is filled to capacity or is canceled. Space is limited and available on a first come, first serve basis. All classes and events are subject to cancellation due to lack of participation.

Participants should wear comfortable shoes and clothing for all outdoor sessions. Sandals, flip-flops or open-toe shoes should not be worn.

For all trips and activities, Rowan County Cooperative Extension, its staff and volunteers, are not responsible for sunburn or insect bites and will not administer either sunscreen or insect repellant. Parent/guardian is responsible for applying these protective agents.
