Black bears spotted in northwest Charlotte
CHARLOTTE (AP) — Police and animal control officers are keeping an eye on a northwest Charlotte neighborhood after reports of two bears being sighted by a teenager on her way to school.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police said a 16-year-old girl was on her way to a school bus stop when she saw the bear shortly before 8 a.m. Tuesday.
The girl said the bears stood on their hind legs and she ran back to her home.
Agents from the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission went through the woods looking for bear tracks, but found no evidence of the bears passing through the area, Neighborhood residents expressed fear that the bears will return.
The commission said juvenile bears scatter from their home territory. Adult bears sometimes roam many miles in search of food and mates.
