Naomi Drye shared this old Salisbury Post clipping from June 2, 1939, of that year’s mascots for Boyden High School seniors. You might not realize it, but the girl on the left is former U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Dole, then little Elizabeth Hanford, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Hanford of South Fulton Street. The boy on the right is Merle F. Dye Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. M.F. Dye Sr. The caption said, ‘With two such bonny mascots the 1939 graduates should carry their good fortune through the years to come.’ Boyden High is today’s Salisbury High School.
