Catawba pitcher Carley Tysinger broke the NCAA Division II record with 27 strikeouts in the eighth-seeded Indians’ remarkable 6-3 win against top-seeded Lenoir-Rhyne on Thursday in the first round of the SAC softball tournament.
The game in Harrogate, Tenn., went 16 innings. Tysinger (18-9) pitched 15 2/3. Emily B. Huneycutt relieved and got the final out.
Catawba had 16 hits, with Tysinger, Sydney Hyder and Natalie Naturile getting three each. Taylor Adams had a decisive, two-run single in the 16th.
• On Wednesday, Tysinger and outfielder Kristen Stinnard were named second team All-SAC. Katherine Shumaker was SAC Honorable Mention. Catawba plays Tusculum today at 12:30 p.m. at Lincoln Nemorial.
East Rowan won 8-2 against West Iredell on Thursday in the Easter tournament the Mustangs are hosting at Staton Field.
Despite an illness, Connor Johnson (8-0) held the Warriors to two hits and one earned run in five innings before Joseph Peeler pitched two shutout innings.
Michael Caldwell, Dustin Ritchie and Mason Doby had two hits each for the Mustangs (14-6). Caldwell, Ritchie, Doby, Ike Freeman and Luke Setzer drove in runs.
• West Rowan rolled 5-0 over North Iredell on Thursday at Staton Field.
Austin Love pitched six strong innings for the Falcons (10-7), and Nick Collins finished with a 1-2-3 inning.
Love allowed three hits and two walks and fanned four.
Noah Teeter had three hits for West. Micah Marsh, Harrison Baucom and Michael Pinkston had two hits each. Teeter, Marsh, Baucom and Pinkston all had RBIs.
• In the early game at Staton Field, Mooresville romped 12-1 against Uwharrie Charter.
• A.L. Brown’s Hayden Taylor pitched his second no-hitter of the season as the Wonders rolled 10-0 against North Rowan in a Thursday consolation game in the F&M Bank Classic at Veterans Field. Taylor struck out three and walked one.
The Wonders banged out 14 hits, with Kameron Sherrill and Daniel O’Kelley getting three each. Geoffrey Jarvis had two hits.
A.L. Brown plays Northwest Cabarrus in the fifth-place game at A.L. Brown today at 1:30 p.m.
North plays Salisbury in the seventh-place game at A.L. Brown today at 11 a.m.
• Northwest Cabarrus pulled away in the late innings and beat Salisbury 17-3 in an F&M Bank Classic game.
• Mount Pleasant plays Robinson in the third-place game in the F&M Bank Classic today at 4 p.m.
• West Davidson lost 10-2 to East Forsyth on Thursday. Graham Shoaf had two hits for the Green Dragons (12-7), who take on Central Davidson tonight at 7 in Tyro.
The Greater Cabarrus Homeschool Stallions lost 10-5 to Albemarle’s varsity on Wednesday in Easter tournament action.
Caleb Threadgill and Hunter Shepherd had two hits each for the Stallions (12-6). Noah Jarret doubled.
• In a 5-2 loss to West Rowan’s jayees, Shepherd had three hits for the Stallions and Josh Holt had a double.
• The Stallions won 8-2 against West Clumbus with Dalton Lankford, Tyler Hartsell and Connor Wallace getting two hits each. Hartsell drove in two runs. Sawyer Strickland pitched a complete game.
• The Stallion beat North Stanly 7-0.
Shepherd had homer, double and three RBIs. Lankford and Holt had two hits and two RBIs. Holt, Hartsell and Threadgill had doubles. Shepherd pitched the shutout and fanned six.
The Stallions play Lake Norman Charter Monday.
The Kannapolis Intimdators stayed hot with a 7-4 win at Rome on Thursday.
The Intimidators (10-9) got a homer from Tyler Williams and RBIs from six players.

The 33rd annual Edgar Welch Memorial Golf Tournament for Rowan County women will be played at 9 a.m. on May 20 and 22 at Corbin Hills and the Country Club of Salisbury.
The tournament is open to all women with an established handicap at a Rowan club and anyone who has played in the tournament before.
Entry forms are available at local clubs. The $60 fee includes golf, carts, prizes, and the luncheon on May 22. The format is net best-ball twosome. Gross prizes also are awarded.

• The Corbin Hills women participated in the State Handicap Tournament on Wednesday.
Corbin Hills’ Norma Burgess won the net score with a 65 in an event that attracted golfers from all over the state.

• The Country Club of Salisbury’s men’s senior Interclub team defeated Forsyth County Club on Thursday 24-12. Winning team members were Richard Dwiggins-Ken Reid, Victor Wallace-Burl Brady, Frank Eason-David Roueche, Bruce Rogers-Jack Seybold, David Jordan-Harold Buchanan and Jim Benton-George Glover.
• The Country Club of Salisbury’s Women’s Golf Association played an 18-hole net competition on Thursday. Bev Cobb finished first at 73. Kristi Laton was second at 75. Cindy Carmazzi finished at 80 for third.
Pfeiffer announced the hiring of Tooey Loy as its new women’s head basketball coach. Loy has 17 years of Division I coaching experience at High Point and was twice named the Big South Coach of the Year.
Appalachian State’s men’s basketball staff is complete with the hiring of three assistant coaches, head coach Jim Fox announced on Thursday.
Jason Allison, Bryan Lentz and Mantoris Robinson join Fox on the Appalachian State bench. The trio boasts a combined 27 years of collegiate coaching experience.
In Gardner-Webb’s 10-6 win against Appalachian State on Wednesday, Alex Newman (Davie) had two hits for the Bulldogs. Preston Troutman (East Rowan) had two hits for ASU. Brian Bauk (Salisbury) pitched a scoreless ninth for the Mountaineers. He allowed one hit and struck out two.
• Pfeiffer lost 6-5 to King in 10 innings on Thursday in the first round of the Conference Carolinas Tournament in Burlington. Dylan Goodman (South Rowan) went 1-for-5 for the Falcons.
Pfeiffer third baseman Tyler Summers and pitcher Ethan Green were first team All-Conference Carolinas. Pfeiffer had five second team picks.

Thirteen-year-old Allison Legacy Race Series driver Jake Ruggles is dedicating his race this weekend in Hickory to the Autism Society of North Carolina.
