The Salisbury-Rowan Symphony Society is offering a summer full of musical experiences featuring young musicians. The public is invited to any of the free concerts.
The fledgling Rowan Youth Orchestra has two concerts in May.
They will open for the Concert Choir and perform during the intermission of its spring concert on May 16. The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church.
On May 23, the Rowan Youth Orchestra will present its own spring concert at First United Church of Christ. That performance begins at 7 p.m.
Information about auditioning for the orchestra’s next season will be available at the May 23 concert.
After-School Strings classes will show families and friends what they have learned to play in one year. The classes at Landis and Isenberg elementary schools will each present their programs on May 27. The time of the concert hasn’t been determined but will be sometime around 5 p.m.; call the symphony office if you plan to attend.
The second-year After-School Strings class at Granite Quarry will participate in Granite Quarry’s “Let’s Get Connected Day” at Granite Park on May 17. They are scheduled to play at 11 a.m. Their spring concert is at Granite Quarry Elementary School on June 4 at 5 p.m.
There are many opportunities to learn to play a violin, viola, cello or bass.
The Symphony’s Summer Strings Camp is scheduled for the week of June 16 at St. John’s Lutheran Church. Because of the continuing support of AkzoNobel Global Personal Care, tuition remains $100 for the five-day camp. Brochures are available and space is limited, so contact Symphony Society Education Director Susan Trivette as soon as possible at 704-637-4730 or strivett@catawba.edu.
New music classes are offered this summer, especially for the very young. Marguerite Keller will teach a Beginning Suzuki class on Saturday mornings from May 3 to June 21. This class is open to children beginning at age 4. For Suzuki students who have completed Twinkle Variations, she will teach a Suzuki Early Book I class on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from June 17 to July 31. There is a fee for both classes, and scholarships are available.
