LANDIS — The usual running outfit for racing a 5K is a light shirt and shorts, meant to keep you as cool as possible throughout the event. But most of the runners approached the starting line Saturday morning for the SNACE Sprint for Supplies 5K wearing some type of warm rain gear. Temperatures in the 40s and a stiff north breeze had many runners hoping for a fast start that would get them warmed up.
Richard Ellis won the 5K in a time of 21 minutes and 56 seconds. The top female was Tracy McMillin in 27 minutes and 58 seconds. Noah Green won the abbreviated fun run with a time of 2 minutes and 38 seconds.
Race director Anne Brafford said, “I just am so happy that our runners and walkers came out to participate. All the volunteers, especially those from the Landis Fire and Police Departments, did a great job under trying conditions. Thanks to everyone from Catawba College especially. We are happy to make a significant contribution toward purchasing school supplies for needy children.”
Sponsors for the event were the town of Landis, Ulearn2run, Bradshaw Financial, Goodman Farm Supply, Ideal Janitorial Supply, Merrell Family Dentistry, Candy Shoppe on Main, Centerview Hardware, The Forum, SA Sloop Heating and Air, Piedmont Alloy and Windstream Inc.

West Rowan High School will host the 5th Annual Tom Cowden 5K at Sloan Park on Sunday, April 27, in memory of Cowden, who battled brain cancer until he lost the fight at age 15.
Following his death, the Tom Cowden 5K race committee has picked a local family in need to receive the proceeds raised from the event.
The year, funds will help offset medical expenses of Brooklynn Parker, a toddler who has experienced open-heart surgery and other health problems.
The 5K run/walk will begin at 2 p.m., with a half mile fun run starting at 2:50 p.m. Both courses will finish inside the park. Refreshments and awards will follow the completion of both events.
Military themed awards will be presented in 14 age groups for both males and females.
Brooklynn’s dad also is experiencing issues following his most recent deployment to Afghanistan.
Race director Brittany Chester said, “We could not do this without the community’s support.”
