Sands stays hot

Former Catawba slugger Jerry Sands went 3-for-4 for Durham on Friday in a Triple A game against Norfolk.
Sands is batting .352 in 16 games with four homers, seven doubles and 15 RBIs.
Sands has walked 12 times, so his on-base percentage is a lofty .470. He owns a five-game hitting streak.
Intimidators
The Kannapolis Intimidators were postponed on Friday.
Kannapolis plans to play a doubleheader against West Virginia today, with first pitch at 5 p.m. Gates open at 4:30 p.m.
One ticket is valid to attend both games.
Davie County rolled 18-0 against Parkland in a CPC game that went the full seven innings.
Davie had a big top of the seventh in the rain.
Davie (7-11, 4-6 CPC) got a four-hitter from Tristan Comer.
Ross Hoffner had three hits, scored three runs and drove in two.
Ben Beeson had two doubles, scored twice and knocked in two runs.
Jacob Barnhardt drove in four runs and scored twice.
Chris Reynolds scored three runs.
• East Rowan’s jayvee team won 7-6 in eight innings against the Greater Cabarrus Homeschool Stallions on Friday at Staton Field.
Hunter Shepherd and Dalton Lankford had doubles for the Stallions, who scored five runs in the seventh.
East won in the eighth when Tanner File’s double scored Nathan Hill.
The Stallions (12-4) play West Rowan’s jayvees today at 4 p.m. at Staton Field.

Wendy Gaines of Triton and Michael Gainey of Rocky Mount High School are the recipients of the ninth annual Toby Webb Coach of the Year Awards given by the NCHSAA. The coaches will be recognized at the NCHSAA’s Annual Meeting on May 1 in Chapel Hill.
Wingate beat Tusculum 5-3 to win the SAC men’s tourney in Rock Hill on Friday.
Tusculum rallied to beat Newberry 5-4 for the women’s championship.

College lacrosse
Catawba lost 18-7 to Queens in a SAC women’s tournament semifinal on Friday.
Meredith Jones scored four goals for the Indians.
Alyssa Corace scored her school record 37th goal of the season, and Jones set a record with her 11th assist.

College softball
Catawba lost 1-0 and 9-2 to Brevard on Friday.
The good news was the Indians (24-19, 9-13) qualified for the SAC tournament by finishing eighth.
The tournament starts Thursday at Lincoln Memorial.
South Rowan Junior Legion sign-ups are Saturday, April 26 at 10 a.m. at the South Rowan field.

Corriher-Lipe won 8-6 against Southeast. Anthony Fox went the distance and fanned seven for the Yellow Jackets. Brandon Goodman had two RBIs, while Garrett Harrington had three.
