St. Paul’s Lutheran Church’s 2014 Cruise ‘n Barbecue will be held April 26 to benefit Steve and Mary Holland.
Steve Holland continues treatment for recently discovered lung cancer. Many people know Holland through his work as electrician and HVAC technician at A.V Crawford & Son.
The church, located at 205 St. Paul’s Church Road, also will have bone marrow screening in honor of another church member, Chloe Monroe.
Monroe is a 20-year-old sophomore at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. She was an athletic and academic standout at Carson High.
On returning home for the holidays last November, Monroe learned she has acute myeloid leukemia, and she is expected to have a bone marrow transplant later this month in Chapel Hill.
St. Paul’s Women donated $2,000, and members overall donated another $2,000 to pay for the screening for as many people as show up to join the bone marrow registry at the Cruise ‘n Barbecue.
A full day of activities is planned, starting at 10 a.m. with the Poker Cruise. Participants are encouraged to enjoy driving their classic cars, motorcycles, or even family mini-vans on the Poker Cruise throughout the Rowan County countryside before returning to St. Paul’s to enter the Car & Motorcycle Show.
At each of five stops, participants draw a card, with the best and worst hands receiving a cash prize.
At noon, the Cruise ‘n Barbecue activities begin with Port-Pit barbecue chicken dinners that will be available throughout the afternoon. Visitors can relax with food and music as they enjoy a wide selection of classic cars, motorcycles, street rods and rat rods; raffles; and door prizes. Awards and drawings begin at 4 p.m.
Events may be entered individually, or a $35 Super Ticket includes the Poker Cruise entry, Car Show registration and two barbecue tickets.
The schedule:
9 a.m.-noon — Poker Cruise registration and activities begin. Participants enjoy the route at their leisure, then return for the Cruise-in and show.
