Fifteen student-athletes from NCHSAA member schools were honored with “Heart of a Champion” recognition.
Winners included West Rowan’s Rebecca Parker and Jac’quez Jackson.
Each of the NCHSAA member schools had the opportunity to nominate one male and one female student-athlete for the recognition.
The award is based on sportmanship, citizenship and participation in at least one varsity sport. Other area winners included Albemarle’s Kiana Davis-Hill and West Iredell’s Payton Shuford and Natalie Kerley.
The winners were honored at a luncheon on Saturday at the Fairfield Inn and Suites in Durham.
Tuesday’s activity in baseball (and all other sports) was washed out, with most rescheduled for today.
• The annual F&M Bank High School Baseball Classic returns to CMC-NorthEast Stadium, home of the Kannapolis Intimidators, on April 23-25.
The eight-team tournament will crown a champion. The field includes South Rowan, Carson, North Rowan, Salisbury, A.L. Brown, Northwest Cabarrus, Mount Pleasant and Robinson.
First-round and winner’s bracket games will be played at CMC-NorthEast Stadium. Consolation games will be played at A.L. Brown.
Tickets are $6 for adults, $5 for students and seniors, and children 3 and under will be admitted free.

Carson’s tennis team topped Hickory Ridge 6-3 in SPC action on Monday.
Marshall Wood, Jonathan Martin, Graham Purcell and Casey Lucas won singles matches for Carson. Wood-Lucas and Purcell-Grayson Haff won in doubles.
Catawba-Barton was rained out on Tuesday.
• Catawba’s Shaefer Shepard was named SAC Pitcher of the Week.
He threw 10 scoreless innings and struck out 11.
Catawba’s Madison Kennedy (Salisbury) shot 78-79-81 — 238 and placed second in the SAC women’s golf championships in Sevierville, Tenn. Catawba’s Leslie Long finished at 250 and tied for seventh.
Wingate won the women’s title.
• Carson-Newman’s men won the championship. Catawba placed ninth. Catawba’s Matt Hardman shot 77-74-77 — 228 and placed fourth individually.
• UNC Greensboro’s Roy Dixon (Salisbury) shot 76-77 — 153 and tied for 35th in the rain-shortened Reunion Intercollegiate held in Mississippi.
• The 20th annual Catawba Football Golf Classic is set for May 9 at 10 a.m. at Warrior.
• Elon’s Troy Beaver (Salisbury) shot 69-67-74 — 210 and tied for eighth in the Wofford Invitational.

College lacrosse
Catawba’s women are the No. 4 seed in the SAC tournament and will play top-seeded Queens at 4 p.m. Friday at Queens in a semifinal.
The Kannapolis Intimidators split a doubleheader at Hickory on Tuesday.
Kannapolis lost 3-1 but bounced back to win 9-2.
Jeremy Dowdy drove in four runs in the nightcap.

Low ‘A’ Flight player with a net of 63.99 was Steve Albanese. Low ‘B’ Flight player with a net of 64.64 was Paul Dombrowski. Low ‘C’ Flight player with a net of 62.60 was John Cress. Low ‘D’ Flight player with a net of 66.88 was Larrey Perrell.
