SALISBURY — Team Auto Group is partnering with the Rowan Little League as part of the national Chevrolet Youth Baseball program that provides new equipment, a monetary contribution, invitations to free instructional clinics and an opportunity for community members to earn additional donations for their league via a test drive fundraiser.
“Youth baseball provides positive and productive life lessons for young people across America, and the Chevrolet Youth Baseball program is an extension of Chevrolet’s commitment to baseball, community and families. Team Auto Group is bringing that same dedication to youth baseball,” said Thom Dillard, president of Team Auto Group.
This is the program’s ninth year. Last year, more than 1,600 Chevrolet dealers participated across the country.
Team Auto Group will present a monetary contribution to Rowan Little League and an equipment kit that includes bags, batting tees, catcher’s gear, water bottles and T-shirts.
The sponsorship also includes youth clinics featuring current and former MLB/MiLB players and coaches, and instructors from Ripken Baseball and the Major League Baseball Players Alumni Association.

SALISBURY — Salisbury City Council member and architect Karen Alexander was chosen as one of 50 businesswomen in the Charlotte region to serve as a mentor for Bizwomen Mentoring Monday this week.
Alexander was selected by the Charlotte Business Journal. Bizwomen Mentoring Monday will offer attendees the opportunity to choose from 50 mentors who are the most influential women in the community for one-on-one coaching sessions for five minute conversations.

Novant Health Rowan Medical Center has received the With The Guidelines Stroke Silver-Plus Quality Achievement Award for implementing specific quality improvement measures outlined by the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association for the treatment of stroke patients.
The guidelines help hospitals provide the most up-to-date, research-based care to speed recovery and reduce death and disability for stroke patients. The award came from meeting quality achievement measures for rapid diagnosis and treatment of stroke patients. These include aggressive use of medications and risk-reduction therapies aimed at reducing death and disability.
The guidelines also help staff members implement prevention measures, which include educating stroke patients to manage their risk factors and to be aware of warning signs.
Hospitals can make customized patient education materials available upon discharge, based on the patients’ individual risk profiles.

LEXINGTON — The PPG Industries Foundation has donated more than $27,000 to five Davidson County organizations for educational and human-services programs. The grants were made on behalf of PPG Industries’ fiber glass manufacturing facility in Lexington, and each donation represents the company’s commitment to supporting local organizations that provide needed resources in the community.
The recent grants helped:
• Davidson County Community College offer STEM Camp, a summer camp for rising fourth-eighth graders to develop their science, technology, engineering and math skills;
• Fairgrove Family Resource Center provide support to a variety of local programs;
• Pastors Pantry continue targeting senior hunger;
• United Way of Davidson County continue to provide support to various community activities;
• Communities In Schools of Lexington support efforts to keep kids in school, off drugs and alcohol, and out of trouble.

CONCORD — Carolinas Wound Care and Hyperbaric Center, a facility of CMC-NorthEast, has received the 2013 “Center of the Year” award from Healogics Inc. in recognition of its quality patient care and clinical outcomes. More than 550 wound care centers have the opportunity to qualify for the award, and only one center is recognized as “Center of the Year.”
“We’re very proud to be recognized for the high-quality care and patient experience we provide,” said Dr. Brian Schmidt, medical director of Carolinas Wound Care and Hyperbaric Center. “We’re committed to caring for our more than 700 patients with specialized treatments and helping them return to active lives.”
Carolinas Wound Care and Hyperbaric Center uses hyperbaric oxygen therapy to help treat wounds and internal medicine conditions.
CONCORD — Carolinas HealthCare System certified athletic trainer Jim Bazluki was recently inducted into the North Carolina Athletic Trainers’ Association (NCATA) Hall of Fame. Bazluki is part of CMC-NorthEast’s sports medicine and special events department, and currently acts as a certified athletic trainer for Northwest Cabarrus High School.
The Hall of Fame distinction recognizes Bazluki’s numerous contributions to the field of athletic training during a career spanning more than 20 years. Additionally, he was previously named Athletic Trainer of the Year by the NCATA in 1997 and 2005.
Bazluki received his Bachelor of Science in Physical Education and Health from East Carolina University and his Master of Arts degree in Health Education and Promotion from East Carolina University, where he also was a graduate assistant athletic trainer.
Carolinas HealthCare System maintains a team of nearly 60 certified athletic trainers, who provide a wide range of services to high-school athletes, including prevention, emergency care, clinical evaluations, musculoskeletal care and therapeutic intervention and rehabilitation for many problems and injuries. The trainers serve nearly 19,000 students across 33 schools in five different counties, and have the region’s only mobile training vehicle to travel to youth sporting events or for events in remote locations.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has recognized Food Lion with its 13th consecutive Energy Star award for energy efficiency efforts.
“Food Lion has focused on numerous sustainability initiatives for more than a decade, such as energy conservation, reducing carbon dioxide emissions throughout our 10-state footprint and reducing its energy consumption by more than 30 percent since 2000,” said Susan Sollenberger, director of energy, maintenance and equipment purchasing at Food Lion.
Those honored have reduced greenhouse gas emissions by setting and achieving aggressive goals, and employing innovative energy efficiency approaches.
Nearly 20,000 organizations participate in the program.
Delhaize Group, which owns Salisbury-based Food Lion, recently signed an agreement with Tropic Group B.V. to sell its Bosnian and Herzegovinian stores. The Belgium-based international food retailer will sell all of its 39 Bosnian & Herzegovinian as a part of a strategy to focus more on its core businesses in the region. The transaction is expected to be complete in the third quarter of 2014 following regulatory approval.
Delhaize recently sold most of its U.S.-based Sweetbay, Harveys and Reid’s supermarket stores to another national supermarket chain, Bi-Lo Holdings.
