Mariah Coleman scored two goals for West Rowan in a 4-0 win against Concord in SPC soccer played in adverse weather conditions on Tuesday. Kelly Boley and Victoria Patterson also scored goals for the Falcons.
West is 4-1 and contending in the league race. Carson is 4-0. Cox Mill is 3-0. Hickory Ridge is 5-1 after losing Monday to Cox Mill.
• South Rowan lost 10-1 to Hickory Ridge in SPC action on Tuesday. Keirsten Morgan scored for the Raiders on an assist by Brittany Sprinkles.
• Carson-NWCabarrus was postponed to tonight.
• Salisbury rescheduled its match with Trinity for Thursday at 5 p.m.
Salisbury’s CCC opener with East Davidson was postponed to today and will be played at 4:30 p.m. at Robertson Stadium.
• North Rowan’s CCC opener with Lexington was postponed to Thursday at 7 p.m.
• West Rowan’s SPC game at Central Cabarrus was postponed from Tuesday to tonight. West also announced that Friday’s scheduled game will be moved up to Thursday night at West.
• East Rowan-Northwest Cabarrus was postponed and rescheduled for tonight at Northwest. East and Northwest also are scheduled to meet Friday at Staton Field. It’s possible that one will be moved up to Thursday. The forecast is for a nice Thursday, but rain is likely to return Friday.
Salisbury’s CCC opener with East Davidson was postpoined to today at 4:30 p.m.
• Lexington-North Rowan softball was pushed back to Thursday at North and will be played at 4:30 p.m.
• West Rowan-Hickory Ridge was postponed and will be played today at Hickory Ridge. West’s home game with Mooresville that was scheduled for today has been scratched.
• South Rowan-East Rowan scheduled for Tuesday was pushed back to April 3.
• A.L. Brown’s game with Robinson was postponed and rescheduled for today at 5:30 p.m. at Robinson.
Carson’s tennis team won 8-1 on Monday against South Rowan.
Singles winners for the Cougars were Marshall Wood, Casey Lucas, Graham Purcell, Jonathan Martin and Matthew Martin.
South Rowan shot 162 to win the SPC golf match held at Rocky River on Monday.
South won for the fourth straight match, holding off West Rowan by one shot.
Other team scores were Hickory Ridge (167), East Rowan (167), Concord (176), Cox Mill (177), Central Cabarrus (181), Carson (196) and Northwest Cabarrus (218). West’s Jake Kennedy was medalist with a 35. Other scorers for West were Coyte Kyles (42), Cameron Hassard (43) and Chris Hassard (43).
South scorers were Davis Richards (36), Evan Neas (40), Hunter Chapman (42) and Brennan Lambert (44).
East scorers were Logan Shuping (38), Nick Lyerly (40), Ben Rollins (44) and Jacob Durham (45).
Carson scorers were Josh Mitchem (45), Josh Coker (48), Logan Overcash (51), Bobby Bauer (52) and Patrick Street (52). Top scores by Cabarrus golfers were turned in by Concord’s Walker Cress (38) and Cox Mill’s Justin Westveer (39).
South leads the season standings, with Hickory Ridge second and West third.
Kennedy leads the individual race with Richards second. Shuping and Westveer are tied for third.
• The Rowan County Championships will be played Thursday at Corbin Hills, with a 1 p.m. start.
After winter sports, Salisbury is on top in the 2A Central Carolina Conference race for the Wells Fargo Cup that symbolizes overall athletic excellence. Salisbury won girls swimming and was second in boys swimming and wrestling. West Davidson is second. North Rowan is fifth.
• In the 3A South Piedmont, Cox Mill is on top after winning swimming, sharing first in wrestling and placing second in boys basketball.
Concord is second. East Rowan is fourth, Carson is fifth, South Rowan is seventh, and West Rowan is eighth.
• In the 4A Central Piedmont, Reagan leads the pack. Davie is sixth.
• In the 4A MECKA, Hough is leading the way. A.L. Brown is sixth.
West Rowan competed in a five-team meet at South Rowan that also included East Rowan, Concord and Northwest Cabarrus.
West placed second in the boys meet with 84 points and third in the girls meet with 81. (The only information submitted was by West).
Winners for West’s boys were Raykwon Torrence in the 110 hurdles (15.7 seconds) and 300 hurdles (42.9) and Chris Patterson in the triple jump (42 feet, 2 inchess).
West’s boys won the 4×200 in 1:33.6 and the 4×100 in 44.3 seconds.
Winners for West’s girls were Brienna Owens in the 400 (1:01.3), Khaila Hall in the 100 (13.3) and long jump (17-2 1/4) and Allison Manley in the shot put (30-1).
Erwin’s boys soccer team won 4-2 against Corriher-Lipe. Gabe Hinceman scored on a free kick. Carter Roane scored off an assist from James Lomax. Lomax and Alex Kalogeromitros had unassisted goals.
Erwin opened with a 17-6 against North Rowan. Trevor Scruggs was the winning pitcher. Bryson Wagner had four RBIs. Hayden Setzer tripled, doubled and singled. Matthew Mathis had two doubles. Wagner, Will Brown and Chandler Antosek doubled.
In this week’s GARS activity at Rolling Hills, David Lee was the low ‘A’ Flight player with a net of 65.05. Low ‘B’ Flight player with a net of 63.22 was David Schenk. Low ‘C’ Flight player with a net of 64.87 was John Cress. Low ‘D’ Flight player with a net of 66.02 was Larry Luther.
• The 2nd Annual Charlie Gillispie Memorial Spring Handicap Tournament was held at McCanless over the last two Sundays. The event was shortened to 27 holes due to weather. 1st place — Eric Richardson (Net score-Even Par, 104 for 27 holes) . 2nd Place — Treva Honeycutt (Net score-3 Over, 107), low female scorer. 3rd Place — Jeff Warren (Net score- 8 Over, 112)
• The Rowan County Church Golf League organizational meeting will be held Tuesday, April 8, at 5:30 p.m. in the clubhouse at McCanless. A member from each team should be present.
• The Snowball Express was played at Crescent over the weekend. Andy Winders-Tommy Bright shot 65 for first gross. Gus Andrews-Russ Priddy shot 66. Joe Crossen-Ronnie Eidson shot 68. A pair of former Catawba baseball players Clay Watson and Ryan Query shot 59 for first net. Larry Whitaker-Neil Stats shot 61. Jason Virden-Jeff Faggart, Andrew Belk-Justin Lefler, Joey Williams-Scott Dickson and Jerimy Chavis-Mike Blume carded 64s.
• In the Carolina Golf Association’s One-Day Tournament at Foxfire, Phil Miller shot 78 to tie for sixth, and David Miller shot 84.
UNC Greensboro’s Roy Dixon (Salisbury) had a career-best, second-place finish and helped UNC Greensboro finish second in the Middleburg Bank Intercollegiate in Williamsburg, Va., that concluded on Tuesday. Dixon shot 72-72-65. Dixon’s 65, the low round of the tournament, enabled him to climb all the way from 14th to second. Dixon made seven birdies and two bogeys on his sizzling round.
Catawba baseball players will shave their heads after the April 19 doubleheader with Carson-Newman. The barbering is expected to happen at about 6 p.m. The Indians are doing it as part of a fundraising effort in the fight against cancer.
Catawba’s Carley Tysinger was named SAC Pitcher of the Week. Tysinger went 3-0 with 34 strikeouts. Tysinger also hit two home runs for the first-place Indians.
• Belmont Abbey’s Samantha Jacobs (North Rowan) pitched well in a 4-2 loss to Limestone on Friday. Jacobs went the distance in the circle and struck out six. Katherine Starnes (South Rowan) and Kaitlyn Jones (South) had hits for the Crusaders.
USC Upstate’s Ross Oden (East Rowan) ran a personal-best 5000 meters Friday night at the Charlotte 49er Classic. Oden finished in 14:56 and currently holds Upstate’s secon-fastest 5K time.
The Salisbury Police Athletic League is holding registration for the fall season on Saturday, March 29, from 11-2 at Hall Gym.
