Catawba’s baseball winning streak reached nine on Saturday with a 12-8, 7-3 SAC sweep of Coker at Newman Park.
In the opener, T.J. Wharton hit a two-run homer and produced four RBIs, Malachi Hanes had a solo homer. Craig Brooks had three hits and two RBIs.
John J. Tuttle (A.L. Brown) pitched five innings for the win. Michael Trombino shined in relief.
Shaefer Shephard (4-0) won the nightcap. Wharton had three more hits. Blake Houston (South Rowan), Julio Zubillga (Carson) and Jon Wallace (NW Cabarrus) had two hits each.
Catawba (18-11, 12-5) plays a series at Wingate next weekend. Catawba is third in the SAC standings. Lincoln Memorial is 13-4, while Wingate is 15-5.
• UNC Pembroke’s Brett Huffman (West Rowan) had two hits in a 7-2 win against Flagler on Saturday.
Catawba’s softball team swept Carson-Newman on Saturday at Whitley Field.
Catawba won 2-1 and 7-5.
Catawba (21-6) is off to a 6-0 start in the SAC.
Carley Tysinger (14-2) was the winning pitcher in both games.
Taylor Adams drove in both runs in the opener with a clutch hit in the fifth.
Tysinger’s three-run homer was the key blow in the nightcap.
• Catawba’s men’s lacrosse team had a 7-0 run and won 15-8 against Tusculum on Saturday at Shuford Stadium.
Alex Dantzler had a career-high five goals for the Indians (5-4, 3-1 SAC).
• Catawba’s women’s lacrosse team (4-5) got five goals each from Ebony Mills and Meredith Jones in Saturday’s 16-6 win at Chowan.
• Catawba’s men’s tennis team (7-12, 1-5 SAC) lost to Tusculum 7-2 on Saturday in Greeneville, Tenn.
• Catawba’s women’s tennis team (10-10, 2-4 SAC) lost to Tusculum 8-1 on Saturday.
Both Catawba tennis teams won 5-4 matches with Carson-Newman on Friday.
Davie’s softball team topped Montour (Pa.) 13-9 on Saturday.
Elizabeth Holland homered and drove in five runs.
Morgan Hendrix, Allie Fruits and K’lea Parks had three hits each. Julie Gough was the winning pitcher.
West Rowan won 6-1 against East Rowan in SPC soccer on Friday. Victoria Patterson and Mariah Coleman scored two goals each.
Kelly Boley and Mikayla Graham scored one each. It was Graham’s first high school goal. Addie Coleman and Mariah Coleman had assists.
Kristen Boley, Claudia Patterson, Taylor Quinn and Madeline Wilhelm led West’s defense.
Devynne Brown scored for East. Kelby Porter set up the goal.
In SPC golf at Crescent, South Rowan shot 160 to win its third straight match.
Other scores were Cox Mill (165), Hickory Ridge (168), West Rowan (169), East Rowan (171), Concord (172), Carson (190), Central Cabarrus (190) and Northwest Cabarrus (222).
South’s Davis Richards shot 36 for medalist honors.
South’s other scorers were Evan Neas (40), Josh Pope (41) and Brennan Lambert (43).
Following Davis in the match were Cox Mill’s Justin Westveer (37), Concord’s Stephen Carroll (37), West’s Jake Kennedy (37), East’s Nick Lyerly (38) and East’s Logan Shuping (39).
Shooting 40s were Neas, Concord’s Walker Cress and Hickory Ridge’s Brendon Galloway and Smit Savini.
Carson’s best score was a 43 by Bobby Bauer.
South leads the season standings, with Hickory Ridge second and West third.
In the individual season standings, Kennedy holds a one-shot lead over Richards.
Westveer is third, with Lyerly, Shuping and Galloway tied for fourth.
• The Irish Creek Invitational was rescheduled for April 28.
South Rowan won 11-8 at Cox Mill in SPC baseball action on Friday and moved into a tie for first in the SPC, along with East Rowan
“It was back-and-forth, very competitive,” South coach Thad Chrismon said. “I liked the way we responded after losing a tough game to them on Thursday. We swung the bats a lot better. We still struck out too much and we left 12 men on base, but we did have 14 hits.”
The Raiders (8-2, 6-2) got four hits and five runs scored from leadoff man Tyler Fuller. Eric Goldston and Austin “Bo” Corriher had three hits each. Eric Stowe had two hits and drove in three runs.
Andrew Fulton relieved Burke Fulcher in the fifth inning and was the winner.
South led 5-1 early but trailed 6-5 after five innings.
It was 7-all going to the seventh. Matt Honeycutt walked with the bases loaded to break the tie, and Corriher and Stowe followed with hits for insurance runs
Austin Fox started on the mound for Cox Mill and lasted six innings.
South will play at Carson on Monday in a game being moved up a day due to expected bad weather on Tuesday.
