The Salisbury Ghost Walk kicks off the 2014 walking tours beginning this Friday and Saturday evenings, March 7 and 8 at 7 p.m. Join “Boo” and the gang for a walk around down town Salisbury to hear tales of how in the 1800’s Salisbury earned the reputation as the “wettest and wickedest” town in the state. Be sure to bring your camera, smart phone and a flashlight because some of the tales will come to life via present day hauntings. In 2010 this walk received a tourism award from the Governor’s Office. The cost is only $5 for students and $10 for adults. Piedmont Players Theatre announces its Youth Theatre Winter audition workshop on Saturday, March 15, from 10 a.m. to noon and 12:30 to 2:30 p.m.
This workshop will focus on preparing students to audition for a non-musical production, specifically geared toward PPT’s upcoming production of “Nancy Drew: Girl Detective.” Skills developed will be in stage performance, character development, movement and effective auditioning techniques.

CHINA GROVE — On March 11, China Grove turns 125. This Saturday, March 8, the town will celebrate with activities, festivities and ceremonies. The Fire Department will celebrate its 90th anniversary at this time alos, and the Historical Society of South Rowan will celebrate its 25th anniversary.
The afternoon of festivites on Saturday will start at 2:30 p.m. at the Town Hall with the mayor receiving a 125th year proclamation. At 3 p.m. a short ceremony will be held on the porch of the China Grove Roller Mill and from 3:30 until 5:30 p.m. visitors can enjoy a ride through town in a wagon pulled by horses from Lazy 5 Ranch. Tours of the Roller Mill will be conducted and there will also be country and bluegrass musical entertainment A wiener roast will conclude the activities.
The event is free, but donations are appreciated. This event is sponsored by the Town of China Grove, The Historical Society of South Rowan and the China Grove Board of Trade.

Hurley Park presents Andrea Sprott, Elizabeth Lawrence House and Garden Curator, in a lecture entitled “Elizabeth Lawrence: the Legacy of an Extraordinary Plantswoman.”

Uncle Buck’s All American Music Pub & Grub is adding onto their weekly attractions. In addition to hosting over 50 musical acts and community events so far in the new venue, located at 127 South Main St, UB’s has made Thursdays an open jam night to be hosted by David Myers of local rock band Big Break. Musicians and performers are welcome to Uncle Buck’s appealing focal point, a 20×20 raised stage with drum riser and full PA. The platform is lit with multiple stage lamps including 10 parcam lights. The walls and background are decorated with band memorabilia from past performers along with autographed fliers and set lists.
Musicians are encouraged to come in and sign up at 8 p.m. to add their name on a list to perform for the night. David Myers hopes to grow the open jam to have a full house band available to fill in for solo musicians.

CONCORD — Tickets are available for Old Courthouse Theatre’s fundraising musical revue “Unsung OCT,” held on on Friday and Saturday, March 28 and 29 at 8 p.m. and Sunday, March 30 at 2:30 p.m.
Throughout its history the Old Courthouse Theatre has been filled with the music of Broadway. However, there are still countless musicals yet to be sung within these walls, and “Unsung OCT” is a new revue that will showcase songs from these still “un-sung” shows. The 17th annual Salisbury Confederate Prison Symposium is April 4-6 this year, and those registering by March 15 will receive a discount. The event begins on Friday, April 4 with the Friendship Banquet, lecture, music, recognition of veterans, and door prizes. Saturday includes six lectures, light refreshments, displays, and books. On Sunday the public is invited to a 10 a.m. memorial service for prisoners at the Salisbury National Cemetery and an 11 a.m. service for guards at the Old Lutheran Cemetery. Infantry and Artillery reenactors in Blue and Gray will comprise the Honor Guard.
Scheduled to present lectures are: Peter Carlson on civilian prisoners Junius Browne and Albert Richardson; Gregg Cheek on Commandant Capt. George W. GOLD HILL — Steve Martin has more than 25 years of experience carving spoons and other wooden items. He specializes in green wood working and traditional wood working using only hand tools. Those interested in learning this art will have the opportunity to join one of Martins’ classes at River Pines Art in The Little Log Cabin on Gold Hill. Classes will be held Saturdays, March 29, May 24, Aug. 23 and Oct. 18, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Using tools provided by the instructor, each student will be guided through the process of carving a spoon using saws, hatchets, chopping blocks, draw knives, spoke shaves, shaving horses, hook knives, gouges, scrapers, food safe finishing oil, etc.
Participants must be at least 14 years old or have a prearranged agreement with instructor. The cost is $40 per participant for one class, with five students per class.
